AMSTERDAM
ADMIRALS 17
SCOTTISH CLAYMORES 19
AMSTERDAM ARENA May
21st 2004
The Claymores scraped home a nail biting first road
win of the 2004 season beating Amsterdam Admirals 19-17 at the Amsterdam
Arena.
With the Scots looking to avenge a 3-0 defeat by
the Dutch at Hampden last month, things could not have started better
for the Claymores who coasted to a 16-3 half time lead.
But the Scots failed to match to their whirlwind
start in the second half in what turned out to be a disappointing
full European run out for third string Quarterback Tom Arth who
gave up two interceptions.
And it was touchdowns from Chris Horn and Chris
Downs along with Silvio Diliberto conversion attempts that put Amsterdam
one point infront early in the fourth quarter.
But Arth stayed on the field to redeem himself and
got the Claymores to the Admirals 25 yard line with 95 seconds remaining,
leaving Hart to nail the crucial 43 yard field goal to out the Claymores
back infront.
And despite a nerve wracking final drive, the Dutch
could not find their way through the Claymores defense, who were
able to shut the Admirals down with 33 seconds on the clock.
Both sides failed to make any impressions on their
opening drives, but the Admirals suffered a setback on their next
possession, when Clint Stoerner was picked off thanks to an acrobatic
catch from Alphonso Roundtree, who returned the back back four yards.
And
on his first start this season Curt Anes engineered an impressive
drive up field which unfortunately stalled at the Admirals 6 yard
line, leaving Rob hart to split the uprights for a 24 yard field
goal to put the Scots three ahead.
Amsterdam immediately hit back with a 22 yard run
from Chris Downs and a 45 yard Curt Stoerner pass to Chris Horn,
taking the ball to the Claymores two yard line.
But as in previous games, the Claymores defense
dug in deep when it was needed and forced the Dutch to settle for
a 20 yard field goal from Silvio Diliberto to tie the scoring with
just over a minute of the first quarter remaining.
The Scots came out firing at the start of the second
when Anes hooked up with Scott McCready for a 22 yard gain.
