Scottish
Claymores v Frankfurt Galaxy
Second
Half Report
After
having to cope with the agony of the Cheeky Girls at half time,
the Scottish fans had to endure more suffering when a horrendous
roughing the passer penalty against the Scots brought the Germans
to the home 21 yard line at the start of the second half.
And minutes later Jon Hilbert was able
to put the visitors in front for the first time with a 38 yard field
goal, his first field goal of the afternoon.
Things started to positive for the
Claymores on their next drive when Nall fired a 41 yard completion
putting the home side in sight of the Galaxy redzone.
But the drive stalled once again and
unfortunately Holmes did not have his shooting boots on, missing
his second field goal from 35 yards.
This is was certainly a complete turnaround
from last weeks performance. And it was not long before the Galaxy
were threatening the Scottish goal line yet again.
And a pass to Robert Baker brought
the visitors just short of the Claymores endzone, but Jonas Lewis
was on hand to finish things off on the next drive with Kleinman
converting the PAT to put the Scots in trouble at the start of the
final quarter.
Claymores 7 Galaxy 17.
The refs endeared themselves to the
crowd yet again, when a pass interfence on Edell Shepherd was ruled
an incomplete pass, forcing the Claymores to hand possession back
to Frankfurt.
The official continued to do the Scots
no favours handing out more controversial penalties, allowing the
Frankfurt drive to continue - much to the annoyance of the crowd.
With
time running out, Frankfurt were in no rush to get their new drives
underway. But when they did, they showed no mercy - especially James
Brown, who was showing his former masters what they were missing
with some clinical throws.
The Scottish defense did all that they
could to restrict the drive, forcing them to settle for a 40 yard
field goal attempt from Hilbert which thankfully finished wide.
The Scots had just over six minutes
to claw back a ten point gap. Well within their reach, but nothing
is guaranteed in this league - ask the refs.
Desperation started to creep into the
Claymores play when Nall tried to fire the ball deep to Scott Couper
and was picked off by Barnes for his second interception of the
day. Talk about being brought back down to earth. For many Claymores
fans, there was probably a feeling of deja vue creeping in at this
point (Re: Dreisbach and CO)
But the scene was set for a dramatic
final two minutes when (No 59 ) recovered a Galaxy fumble, leaving
the Scots little time for a miraculous comeback.
A magnificent catch from John Minardi
put the Scots in the Galaxy redzone with just over a minute remaining.
And the scene was set for a nerve wracking final minute after a
bad snap on the PAT saw Rob Hart flattened. Leaving the Scots 63
seconds to recover the onside kick and get six points
But the Claymores turned over again.
End of game as far as the crowd was concerned as they promptly made
their way to the exit.
