Clyde Valley
maintained this season’s unbeaten home record this week when Border
Reivers were on the wrong side of a 50 – 3 score line. The game started
poorly for the Reivers when the QB was sacked by Colin McFadyen on the
first play further misery was added when the Blackhawks recovered the
ensuing fumble.
The Clyde
Valley outfit made the Borders side pay for this mistake when Phil
McCabe took the mad off on the next play and had a dodging 17 yard run
to the endzone for the opening 6 points, Tam Chapman slotted over the
extra point to bring the score to 7.
Blackhawks
next possession increased the score further on a reverse to Ryan
Rodgers, who sprinted 16 yards to the endzone , this time the extra
point sailed wide right. Some crunching tackles from the Clyde V alley
defence forced the Reivers to go 4 and out again. Two plays later Phil
McCabe scampered 28 yards for his second touchdown of the day. This time
Tam Chapman booted the ball between the uprights.
Clyde Valley
marched confidently upfield on their next drive behind some power
running from Darran Sharp but a fumbled pitch on the 25 yards line was
scooped up by Reivers Paddy Gorrill who returned the ball 35 yards. The
away side must have been shattered when Blackhawk’s Colin Mooney
intercepted a wayward pass then delighted when a penalty gave them it
back but a ferocious tackle from Tam Chapman and Ali Longford forced the
Reivers to settle for the 3 points from the 33 yard field goal kicked by
Andrew Logue.
Their defence
also gave the Reivers something to cheer when David Baliff stripped the
ball as the Blackhawks were going in for the score. Unfortunately the
strength of the Clyde Valley defence forced them to go 4 and out. With
excellent field position QB James Keogh connected on a 19yard pass to
Gary Orr to add another 6 and Tam Chapman brought the score to 27 -3
with his boot.
An
exchange of fumbles at the start of the second half did little for the
score line but Clyde valley looked as if they were on the scoring trail
once more with a combination of runs and a completed pass to Scott Frame
but Reivers Barry Walters snatched the ball in the endzone to thwart the
home side, but a sack by Colin Mooney and David Yates stopped the
Borders side taking any advantage.
The Reivers defence dished
out a sack of their own when Michael Hewitt and Paddy Gorrill combined
to prevent a Blackhawks first down. On their next possession the
Blackhawks added another 7, firstly Phil McCabe scurried in from 19
yards out for this third of the day and Tam Chapman kicked the extra
point. The Borders side stuttered on their next possession and
Blackhawks added to their misery when following the punt Ryan Rodgers
gathered in a James Keogh 35 yard pass and dashed to the endzone.
This time Tam Chapman ran with the ball for the extra 2 points. Two
sacks on the Reivers next drive, one from Paul Reid and the other from
Graeme Duncan stopped them in their tracks.
The scoring was
rounded off when Gary Orr had a 59 yard catch and run for the 6 and
David Orr gathered in a Tam Chapman pass for the extra two.
