THE ROUT CONTINUES
Clyde Valley Blackhawks 0 West Coast Trojans 35
This was a game that many people had predicted the
outcome before it started and looking at the result, their predictions
were bang on. But it
was also fair to say that
despite the emphatic score line, the visitors had to fight for every
point.
In what was a tense four quarters, the Trojans, who
had yet to drop a game this season were always going to be firm
favourites and they soon lived up to their pregame billing, cancelling
out the Blackhawks opening drive, and when home side punted away
possession the turned up the heat when Bud McFerren pulled of a text
book return, taking the ball all the way to inside the 10 yard line.
The Blackhawks defense continued to get pushed
further back towards their goal line, but the Trojans eventually broke
through when Mickael Olivia powered through the D line for the opening
touchdown with Tommy McGeorge delivered a successful conversion attempt
for a 7-0 lead.
It was a positive response from the Blackhawks, but
penalties forced them back into their own half of the field and in the
end had to punt the ball away.
However the home side continued to battle hard to contain the
league leaders attack
Then early in the second quarter it looked as if the
visitors were back on the march again.
But the momentum appeared to take a dramatic turn when
quarterback Gary McNey, under pressure, was picked off by Gary Orr, who
returned the ball into the Trojans half.
However the shine was taken off the move when the Refs were
penalised 15 yards for an illegal block.
The Blackhawks could not take advantage of the
turnover and as the game progressed, tempers were starting to fray on
both sides who showed no let up on their work rate, with no change in
the scoring.
But with just over five minutes of the half, the
“McFerren Express” was back on track, tearing down the far side all the
way to the Clyde Valley endzone for a second touchdown with Davy Fallon
pitching the ball to McNey for a two point conversion.
Then after another great punt return from Ruaraidh
MacDonald, the visitors were within striking distance once again.
And with just over two minutes of the half remaining,
the visitors increased their lead when McNey picked off McGeorge for
other 6 point points, with the receiver following it up with another
successful conversion kick.
In what was a highly charged third quarter, there
were no changes to the scoreline.
But the Trojans regained control
going into the final period when McNey lobbed the ball to McFerren who
pitch the ball to Davy Fallon for another touchdown, which was followed
with another successful conversion kick from McGeorge.
The receiver-kicker was on hand to finish off another
good day for the Trojans when he pulled in a long g diagonal pass McNey
to make it 35 points without reply
