BRONCOS RIDE INTO TIGERS
RANCH!
Saturday saw the only
two undefeated teams at cadet level in Scotland go head-to-head at Cambuslang
Rugby club, home of the Glasgow Tigers.
The tigers were looking
to see out the last few games of their season without a loss while the
Broncos were still confident from victory against Inverness the previous
week.
The home side won
the toss to begin the game and promptly marched down the field to open
the scoring on a middle range pass.
They soon found themselves
2 scores to the good on another pass play after some good defence stopped
the broncos on their first offensive possession.
The Broncos never
looked like conceding defeat so early in the game and with a few adjustments
to the defence and back to back interceptions by Fraser Thomson the Broncos
soon found themselves with a slender lead after some excellent passes
from Scott McKenzie.
The defence continued
to hold strong with excellent pressure on the opposing quarterback by
Martyn Patterson and solid marking on the tigers most dangerous players
by Daniel Ward and Callum Woods.
This also steadied
the Broncos offense allowing them to open up a 12 point gap at half time
and go in leading 26-14.
In the second half
the momentum swung once again to the Tigers as they were again quick out
of the gates and scoring twice and converting both scores to give themselves
a 4 point lead.
The Broncos once again
were a credit to themselves and scored almost immediately to put themselves
into the lead again by 2 points.
A further adjustment
to the defence and superb touchdown put the Broncos 8 points clear but
with less than 2 minutes to go the tigers levelled the score again to
take the game into overtime.
The Tigers again won
the toss in overtime and a thoroughly exhausted Broncos defense took to
the field but through some excellent play and a massive show of heart
they stopped the tigers cold.
The Broncos offense
then took the field knowing a score would continue their unbeaten streak
and hand the tigers their first loss in over a year.
Some solid effort
from the whole offense gave them excellent field position and on the final
play Scott McKenzie found Daniel Ward in the endzone to win the game and
the importance of the victory to the Broncos was clearly displayed as
they began their loud and well-deserved celebrations swarming both family
members and their coach on the sidelines.
The game MVP (most
valuable player) was Daniel Ward after his 5 touchdowns on offense and
strong leadership on defense.
The second game of
the day against the Bengal’s (tigers B team) was a much more relaxed
affair with many of the younger players being given a taste of the action
and the older players drafted into the game in spells to steady the ship
and ensure the scoring stayed in favour of the Broncos.
Andrew McAllister
scored his first touchdown ever during the game and the team’s two
youngest players Michael Duncan and Kevin Woods both did some excellent
work on defense covering the Bengals offensive weapons.
Graeme Tainsh who
had a solid performance through both games was extremely unlucky to have
2 touchdowns called back in the second game and James Duncan also played
well on both offense and defense against the Bengals.
Fraser Thomson also
gained another interception taking his days total to three and was joined
by Martyn Patterson, Murray Tannock and Daniel Ward. Fraser Thomson took
over at quarterback during the game and completed touchdown passes to
both game MVP Callum woods and Daniel Ward.
The game ended a comfortable
victory for the Broncos 54 – 30 but just as important was the experienced
gained for the team’s younger players who will look forward to some
more game time when they travel to Inverness this Saturday.
