BULLS ON THE STAMPEDE!
Kirkcaldy
Bulls American Football Club hosted the Glasgow Hornets at the Beveridge
Park Festival.
Both teams won their
respective conferences last season, and after a tight game last year
it promised to be an action packed game.
The Hornets started with the ball and made good progress up-field
before a goaline stand by the Bulls saw the Hornets face a fourth
down and goal.
The Hornets quarterback
picked out an open receiver with a precision pass only to see the ball
dropped for a turnover on downs.
The
Bulls quickly
opened the scoring as Neil Arnold threw to McLennan for the touchdown.
On the Hornets next possession Paul Arnold intercepted and returned
it for the score.
McLennan scored the
point after to stretch their lead to
13. The Bulls defense forced another turnover on downs to set
up McLennan for his second TD of the day.
Wylie converted and
the Bulls were up
20-0. The Hornets had to reply and marched up-field. They
had a couple of attempts
at the end-zone before Bramwell intercepted and returned
the ball 45 yards down the sideline for the score.
By now the flood
gates were
open as both
McLennan and Bramwell scored further touchdowns before
the interval. Both touchdowns were converted, one by McLennan and the
other
by rookie Gavin
Dickson.
Just before halftime
the Hornets managed to score as
Gavin Strathearn made a great catch in the end-zone. Initially
the referee ruled the pass
incomplete, however the Bulls players informed the referee
that the catch was good.
With the extra point
good the halftime score
was 40-7 in favour
of the Bulls.
The Bulls opened the second half with possession of
the ball and quickly scored as Arnold found Bramwell
deep
for a 35
yard touchdown
reception.
McLennan converted
to put the Bulls up by 40. The Hornets didn’t
intend to give up and put together a good drive resulting in their second
score of the day. However, any hopes of a fight back were dashed as Arnold
intercepted the point after attempt and ran it back for a 2 point ‘deuce’.
Bramwell came in
at quarterback and continued where Arnold left off. In three possessions
he threw 3 touchdowns passes, 2 to McLennan and
1 to
Arnold. Dickson got his second conversion of the
day as well as John Guthrie also converting.
The Bulls defense
continued to dominate as Todd
continued
to pressure the Hornets QB getting several sacks
and forcing more interceptions.
With little time
remaining McLennan got his sixth touchdown of the day,
Guthrie converted and the Bulls ran out 76-13
winners.
Grant McLennan was named as the smm7.com most
valuable player after breaking 2 club records,
6 reception
touchdowns and
39 offensive
points in a game.
76 points is also a club record, the previous
being 73.
After the
game Headcoach Neil Arnold commented “I’m overjoyed
with todays performance, everything clicked
and we dominated throughout. I’m extremely happy with our new
players. We gave John Guthrie his first starting position and he proved
that he was worth it."
" Both John
and Gavin scored their first points for the
club today and they look like being great players for the future” he
continued “We’ve been
working on our extra point conversions
in training lately"
" In the past
we have lost a few games down to extra points scored. People don’t
seem to realise how important they
can be, it can be difference between winning and losing. I’m
pleased to say that we scored 8 out 11 today."
" I am also
very pleased that
we were able to put a good show on
for all
the spectators that came to watch
the game, and with the Inverness game having to be re-scheduled till
later in
the year our fans may still have
an opportunity to come and watch
the
best American Football team around.”
The Bulls next game is away to the Carluke
Cobras on the 29th of July. A win
for the Bulls will
see them
qualify for the
play-offs as they
attempt to win the Scottish Championship
for the fifth year in succession.
