TIGERS STAY ON TOP

The British College League season got back underway north of the border. And it was Glasgow Tigers who managed to shake off the cobwebs from their winter break, coming from behind to record a welcome victory over their one time local rivals.

Despite the threat of weekend snow storms, it was surprisingly mild afternoon for a college football game, but that was not enough to inspire both teams who both struggled to find their feet, during what was a very dull first quarter.

Thankfully the game sprung to life early in the second quarter when Quarterback Lewis Cameron showed excellent awareness, finding a gap in the Tigers rear guard, firing a pass to an open Paul Docherty in the far corner of the endzone for the opening touchdown.

The Tigers quickly hit back on the first play of the next drive when Ronald “Pebbles” Gaffin for a first down. Then the Tigers moved the chains again when Quarterback Matt McCusker hooked up with Dan Seltzer.

Minutes later, the visitors were handed a big advantage when two successive unsportsmanlike penalties brought the Tigers to the Cally seven yard line.

And despite a tough stand off the Men in Black finally broke through on a big fourth down conversion when McCusker fired a precision pass through the middle to a heavily marked Seltzer for a tying score.

The Tigers then edged in front when Justin McNaughton pulled in a two point conversion catch in the far side of the endzone.

Penalties continued to hamper the Roughriders on their next drive, but Lewis almost caught the Tigers off guard with a move that resulted in the opening touchdown, firing another pass to Paul Docherty down the far side, finishing just short of the first down marker.

Then with just over two minutes remaining in the half the Roughriders were forced into a fourth down gamble which did not even come close.

And despite the good field position, the home defense denied the Tigers any chance of nicking a second touchdown before the break when after two plays; they forced and recovered a Glasgow fumble, setting the scene for what would be a much more entertaining second half.

The Tigers appeared to be taking control of the game during the early stage of the third quarter when a screen pass from McCusker to Gaffin gave the Tigers their second score of the day.

The Glasgow Running Back then increased the visitors lead when Gaffin weaved his way through the middle for another touchdown, which was converted by Seltzer adding another catch in the endzone.

However the Roughriders had no intention of running up the white flag just yet and gave the visitors notice that the game was far from over, when at the start of a new drive on the Tigers 14 yard line, Andrew Steel broke free from the mêlée, powering down the near side for a deserved six points.

With everything still to play for in the final quarter, both sides continued to battle hard, but it was not enough to change the score, giving Tigers the edge at the top of the British College League, with two more games in the regular season to play.
