SAVAGE
TIGERS
There have been plenty of rough days for British
College League newcomers the Caledonian Roughriders, but they certainly
don’t come any worse than what happened today ( Feb 8th) at
Springburn Astro Turf, suffering a 74-0 whitewash against the Glasgow
Tigers.
The Roughriders came into this game still searching
for their first win of their inaugural season.
And despite the two week break in their schedules,
Cally came into the first leg of the Glasgow derby with a badly
depleted squad minus a number of key players, particularly on defense.
The Tigers however had they play offs very much
on their sights.
And after their come from behind victory against
the Lancaster Bombers, the Men in Black were looking to keep the
winning momentum going ahead of their final regular season clash
in two weeks time.
And the fact that members of their personnel turned
up at the ground late in the morning to clear the snow and help
provide some of the officials for the game showed that they were
in no mood to let this fixture fall by the wayside for a second
week running.
( NB: A team clearing up the opponents pitch –
is that a first. I wonder!)
The game finally got underway 15 minutes late and
after Cally failed to make an impression on their first drive, the
Tigers struck gold on their opening possession, when Quarterback
Matt McCusker, fired a precision pass up the middle to Ian Bertram
for the opening six points.
Robert Campbell then brought in the two point conversion
to give the Tigers an early eight point lead.
McCusker linked up Bertram again on the next driver
with an identical pass, which the receiver delivered a second touchdown,
which was successfully converted by McCusker, scrambling to the
corner of the endzone.
The Roughriders were desperately trying to get their
offensive unit in gear, but a big sack on Quarterback Ally Choat,
forced the home side to punt the ball away again, but a Roughing
the Kicker penalty against the Tigers kept their drive alive.
But Cally could make no further headway on their
next set of downs and had to punt away possession during the closing
stages of the first quarter.
