Cheerywayeeeeee!!!!!!!!

It seemed like only yesterday that the Scottish Claymores sent 39,000 fans into a frenzy capturing the World Bowl title at Murrayfield Stadium

And later this year, they hope to do it again on home soil, this time on the West Coast, when Europe's answer to the Super Bowl comes to Hampden Park.

It was back in 1998 I decided to get some of the then World League action for myself with the Claymores squad - not the players, but the Cheerleaders. I AM NOT DAFT.

Read On: Original Date January 1998

With their dazzling outfits and their complicated dance routines, the Scots gridiron glamour girls provide a welcome distraction to the action that takes place on the field during the teams' home games.

So when it came down to the choice of either being surrounded by 30 odd beautiful women with Pom Poms or the prospect of having my head being stood on by a 25 stone plus gorilla with helmet and shoulder pads, it was no contest.

TV Superman's other half, Lois Lane, AKA Terri Hatcher, Singer Paula Abdul and Seventies pin up, Farrah Fawcett are all former members of the pom pom brigade

Despite this glamorous image, it is a fact that the first ever cheerleader was a man - an American student by the name of Johnny Campbell, who ran out into the field during a game in a desperate attempt to get the crowd going

Even though men can officially still be cheerleaders, it is a sight that you don't see in NFL Europe.

(Note I am talking about dancing cheerleaders, not the muscle bound Gymnasts that cropped up a few years ago.)

So I decided to redress the balance and see if a man could cope working alongside Scotland's only professional cheerleading squad.
