Claymores v Rhein Fire Pt 2

Bringing him down

Apart from points on the board, turnovers have been a rare commodity for the Claymores during this season.

So the signs could not have been better when two plays into the opening drive, heavy defensive pressure saw Thomas Wright recover the Joffrey Reynolds fumble.

However despite being in good field position the much criticised Claymores offense struggled to take advantage of the turnover.

They gambled on a long fourth down conversion which failed to find its target, giving Rhein possession at the Rhein 33 yard line.

Dallas Cowboy Quarterback Chad Hutchinson marched the Rhein offense up the field, which thanks to a big defensive stand, stalled at the Claymores 30 yard line, leaving Shaefer to split the uprights from 48 yards for the opening three points.

Earlier in the week, Claymores Head Coach Jack Bicknell emphasized the importance in establishing his team’s running game.

And they made an impressive start on their next possession when two consecutive runs from Maurice Hicks moved the chains for the home side.

Hicks continued to gain more ground for the Scots taking the ball to the Rhein 39 yard line. Then four plays later, Nate Hybl did something that has been foreign to the Claymores since week one, firing a precision pass up the middle to Ron Bellamy for a much welcomed touchdown who collapsed under a pile of bodies in celebration.

A five yard holding penalty gave the Fire good field position at the start of the second quarter, but another big defensive stand forced the Germans rely on their field goal unit again, but thankfully Ingo Anderbrugge’s field goal finished wide left.

Curt Anes took over the quarterback duties in the second quarter and found his man with a terrific pass up the middle to Scott McCready.

Unfortunately the drive made little progress after that and had to punt away possession once again.
With two minutes of the half remaining, the Germans were looking to get back in front before the break.

But the Claymores defense came up trumps once again forcing the Germans to kick the ball away leaving just 16 seconds on the clock.

Unfortunately Anes did not showing enough confidence to test the Rhein secondary with a deep pass and in the ended the half with a loss of yardage.
