DUNDEE EDGE
OUT WOLVES
IN ANOTHER POINTS FEST
EDINBURGH
WOLVES 24 – DUNDEE HURRICANES 34
DATE: SUNDAY
22nd APRIL:
Report and Pic C/O Edinburgh Wolves
After their opening
day victory the Edinburgh Wolves’ first road trip of the season
brought a 10 point loss to the heavily favoured Dundee Hurricanes. The
high scoring game was a close affair with a number of lead changes and
only two points between the sides going into the final quarter.
The first points of
the game fell to Dundee after a wayward pass from Bruce Thomson was tipped
by one of his own receivers into the waiting arms of a fellow Hurricane
who was able to run into the end zone.
The unlikely touchdown
was then followed by a converted extra point giving the home side a 7
– 0 lead.
Edinburgh responded
by turning to running back David Molloy who would carry the majority of
the running game. Early in the second quarter Molloy crashed through into
the end zone to bring the Wolves to within a point.
Following a solid
defensive stand the Wolves got the ball back and turned to change of pace
running back Allan Price who scored the next touchdown to give Edinburgh
a 12 - 7 lead.
Dundee responded with
two quick touchdowns – which were unconverted – leaving the
home side ahead at the half with a 19-12 lead.
However following
the kick off in the second half the Wolves swiftly marched down field
mixing the run and pass with Molloy on the ground and Quarterback David
Glendinning passing and connecting with Johnny Bannerman and Allan Price.
Molloy quickly scored a touchdown bringing the game to only a 1 point
difference.
A defensive miscue
allowed Dundee’s Thomson to find an unmarked receiver mid-way through
the third quarter to cushion their lead to 8 points again, only to have
Molloy respond again with his third touchdown of the game and 5th score
of the season to bring the Wolves back into contention with only 2 points
separating the teams going into the 4th quarter.
After keeping the
game close all day the 4th Quarter seemed to slip away from the Wolves
as a couple of mis-fires including an interception of Glendinning, a coverage
mistake allowing Dundee to score their final touchdown and giving up a
controversial safety which initially drew a flag for a face mask tackle
on the Edinburgh quarterback but had the foul called off and the 2 point
score given to Dundee.
That final safety
would seal the result for Dundee as Edinburgh had to chase the game and
were two scores down with little time to bring the game back.
After the game Wolves
Head Coach Don Edmonston rued over the missed chances “We had kept
it close all game, and that’s no mean feat against a team many predict
to be the division winners, but in the fourth quarter a few errors happened
and the game slipped away from us. Had we had more time in those last
couple of drives then the score would have been much closer, but we do
have a load of rookie players and mistakes will happen."
" We’ll
use this game as a learning experience. Dundee are exactly the team we
expected to play against, they are many people’s pick for the top
in our division for a reason."
" That we kept
it close for so long shows how much we have improved, but we still have
room for improvement.”
The Wolves now face
a short week as they prepare for the Lincolnshire Bombers’ visit
to Meadowbank Stadium on Saturday 28th of April. The 5pm kick off will
be a first for the Wolves in league competition and will certainly give
their fans at home a new experience with the possibility of the game being
played under flood lights.
