Despite weather more suited to the 4th of October rather than the 4th of July, East Kilbride still managed to celebrate Independence Day in the wind and rain with a comfortable home win over the Yorkshire Rams.

The return of quarterback Ryan Hunter was a big boost for the Pirates and he was to have a major say in the outcome of the game.

In the early exchanges, the teams traded punts until the Pirates’ second possession led to the opening score. Hunter capped a 5-play drive with an 11-yard scoring run. Steven Kane’s conversion attempt was blocked but the Pirates led 6-0.

On their next visit to the field, the home Offense doubled that lead, with Hunter again running the ball into the end zone, this time on a trademark 45-yard carry. Kane’s Extra Point kick was good to make it 13-0.

Early in the second quarter, Yorkshire found themselves pinned back on their own 3-yard line. So with the Pirates’ Defense set to pounce for a Safety, the visitors surprised everyone by punting on 3rd Down.

This pushed East Kilbride back but gave possession away.

Kane again converted to make it 20-0. Before the interval that became 23-0 following a successful 22-yard Field Goal from Kane.

There was no further scoring until late in the third quarter. Running back, Gary Carr dived over from the 1-yard line for the touchdown and Kane converted to make it 30-0 going into the final period.

The last score of the day came on a 60-yard interception return by Defensive Back, Scott Findlay.

Kane tagged on the Extra Point to conclude the scoring at 37-0. Yorkshire, who had travelled with a small squad, tried manfully throughout, but failed to make any dent in the Pirates’ Defense. Again, backed up deep in their own territory, they surprised the Pirates with another early punt, this time on 2nd Down.

It was more successful though, as East Kilbride couldn’t take advantage as the game drew to a close.

The Pirates now have a week off before their home tie against the Merseyside Nighthawks on Sunday 18 July. The game at Whitecraigs Rugby Club, Newton Mearns kicks off at 2.30pm.
