EWING STEPS DOWN

SDS and GB Lions Headcoach, Charlie Ewing, recently announced his retiral at the SFFA AGM. Coach Ewing, who co-ordinated the training, development and competition of Scotland’s Cadet, Junior and Youth elite players, has decided to step away for some time given mounting work commitments.

Charlie was a major founding block in the launching of the Scottish Development Squad, in his post as SFFA National Development Officer. Latterly, his success saw him appointed Headcoach of the GB Lions, to oversee the ongoing success of Scotland and England’s Cadet and Junior flag players, in international competition.

Charlie heartened many people in his 3 years with the SDS, putting together a compliment of coaches for the Scotland Cadet, Junior and Youth squads and establishing the squad in its current format. Charlie was also involved with the GB Lions throughout this time and his appointment as Head Coach was a fitting tribute to his efforts in supporting the National Program.

Mark Bramwell, D Co-ordinator with GB Lions Senior flag, said of Charlie, "I have no doubt that without Charlie’s ideas, enthusiasm and sheer determination, we would not have the SDS we know today. He was the architect of the program, and will be sadly missed. Quite simply, one of the finest coaches I have had the pleasure to work with". He continued, "It will be a hard job to fill his shoes, not just in Scotland, but at GB. He has certainly set the precedent for things to come."

Andrew Gambrill, GB Lions ‘O’ Coach (Juniors), expressed his regret at Coach Ewing’s retrial. "Charlie’s year as GB head coach was inspirational. His ability to organise, motivate and coach was second to none. So many learned so much from him, inside such a short space of time. I wish him the best of luck."

Ian Nicholson, GB Lions ‘D’ Coach (Juniors) added "His retirement is undoubtedly a massive loss for GB, the SDS, Grangemouth Broncos, and for flag football in general. I’m sure every coach regardless of which level they met Coach Ewing, feels the same, and we all wish him the best for the future. I would like to thank Coach Ewing for everything that he has taught me over the past 3 years."

Finally Mark Fletcher President of the SFFA commented, "I speak for all members of the SFFA when I say I was saddened to hear of Chalrie's decision to retire from Flag Football. Not only has Charlie created a National Programme to be proud of but as a founding member of the SFFA he has been instrumental in putting the sport of Flag Football in Scotland where it is today."

In his years within the sport Charlie has won honours at all levels. He has led his local club The Grangemouth Broncos to win 4 Scottish titles and 2 UK titles (NFL UK Bowl & Channel 5). He has led Scotland to victory over England on a number of occasions and as part of the Coaching squad of the GB Lions in 2003 he helped bring the European Championship to the UK.
