SAU POP WARNER 2004
Cumbernauld
Giants 20 Bannerman High Wildcats 14
Because of not being
able to field enough players, the Wildcats were forced to forfeit this
League match against the Giants, but both teams decided to have a six
man contest, which proved just as intriguing as the top of the table contest.
The Giants were a
far cry away from the Rams side that won the Pop Warner title earlier
this year with a number of the their players having stepped up to youth
level.
And they were up against
a Bannerman side who may have finished at the bottom end of the league
last time, but a side with a season under their belt with very little
changes in their squad.
And the Wildcats got
off to the best possible start with two touchdowns from Chris Henderson
along with a successful two point conversion attempt to give then a 14-0
lead.
Then after a nervous
start, the Giants started to get into their stride when quarterback Jimmy
Males hands the ball of to powerhouse, Steve Cadbury who made a major
gain down the far side.
But unfortunately
their drive stalled and minutes later the momentum swung back to the Giants
when Steve McArthur was picked off by Jay Laird, who returned the ball
back up field for a touchdown.
On the Giants next
possession, Isaiah Males was in charge of the offensive controls who unloaded
the ball to Phillip Cooper for another long gain.
Cadbury then gained
some more impressive yardage down the far side to be finally gang tackled
at the Bannerman 15 yard line.
Then Colin Smith did
just enough to cross the goal line for another six points, with Laird
bringing in the 2 point conversion catch to tie the scoring.
On their next possession,
Isaiah Males, under heavy defensive pressure dumped the ball off to Cadbury
who like a pocket sized William “The Refrigerator” Perry,
powered up field, bouncing off a number of challenges in the process,
only to run out of steam a few yards short of the Bannerman goal line.
Then on the next play,
Laird killed the game off by running in his second touchdown of the day.
The Giants will round
off their regular season this coming Sunday against Clyde Valley at Wishaw.
