New Kids on
the Block

On yet
another wet and dreary day in good old Wishaw the Clyde Valley Hawks American
football team gave the new members their baptism into competitive football.
The Hawks had challenged
new kids on the block “The Gateshead Senators” to a scrimmage
match on Sunday.
The Senators turned
up on a high after having given team Scotland a run for their money at
the turn of the year.
The size of the squad
and the fact that Gary Marshall the British American Football Association
President had turned up showed they meant business.
The Hawks had no
more the six new boys on the team and were also keen to see how they would
fair in a competitive situation.
The half started with the Hawks winning the toss and deciding to receive
the ball. The opening kick off saw Hawks gain good field position at the
45yard line but after two downs the weather got its first victim when
the ball was fumbled and recovered by Gates head .

This set the pattern
for the day with both teams fumbling the ball in the wet conditions.
In the second quarter Hawks (Colin Nichol) intercepted the ball on his
own 2 yard line to give the Hawks position.
The Senators sensing
a chance to score sent all out Blitz and stopped running back Ryan McCabe
and drove him back into the end zone but due to forward progress the ball
was respotted on the two yard line.
Again the Senators
Blitzed and flushed new Quarter Back (Alan Harrison) out of the pocket
and to try to throw the ball out of bounds.
The ball slipped from
his hand and was picked off and returned for a Touch down giving the visitors
a 6 nil lead. The point after was blocked and the score stayed at 6 v
0 until the forth quarter.
Blake Kyle who plays
on the defence came in at running back and behind good blocking and a
good catch by William Winter to keep the drive alive scored on a 16 yard
run .The snap was to low and all the kicker could do was fall on the ball.
Both sides really
enjoyed the game and will face each other in the league this season .M.V.P.for
Clyde Valley was Blake Kyle.
Hawks head coach
Orr would like to thank all who helped the day to run smoothly. He would
also like to invite anyone wishing to play to contact him on 01555664810
