Clyde
Valley Hawks were crowned Scotland's Young Gridiron Kings in dramatic
fashion today (Sunday), coming from behind to clinch a memorable
23-20 victory over North Lanarkshire Rams at Cambuslang Rugby
Club to clinch the BYFA Scottish Youth Kitted Final.
The
Hawks came into the match as favourites having turned over the
Rams by thirty clear points during an inter-conference match up,
earlier in the season.
But
after coming back from 20-6 down to tying the scoring late in
the fourth quarter, a last gasp throw from Rams Quarterback, David
O'Rourke inside the final minute was intercepted by Gary Orr,
who ran the ball back almost eighty yards to be stopped inside
the Rams ten yard line.
And
with three seconds on the clock, the Hawks bench was in uproar,
when Tom Chapman split the uprights for a decisive field goal
in the last three seconds of play.
Having
lost convincingly to the Hawks back in August, Rams Head Coach,
Darryn Trainor could not have wished for a better start to the
return match, when O'Rourke fired a 20 yard touchdown pass to
Martin Wallace for the opening touchdown
But
the Hawks hit back on their next drive when Running Back, Lee
Nelson found a gap on the near side to blast his way into the
endzone for the tying score.
Wallace
then brought the Rams back in site of the Hawks goal line with
another surging run up field.
And
having had a touchdown crossed off. the Rams rusher made no mistake
the second time around to put the underdogs back infront.
The
Rams then inflicted more misery on their local rivals during the
second quarter, when Adam Donaldson from around the 30 yard line,
cut inside, shrugging off three challenges for another six points,
which was followed by a two point catch from Paul Sweeney.
In
the final stages of the half, the Hawks gave themselves a chance
of a come back when Craig MacMillan
bulldozed his way into the endzone to reduce the deficit to eight
points.
In
what was turning out to be a war in the trenches, the power and
size of the Hawks line paid dividends midway through the fourth
when MacMillan ran in his second touchdown,
which he successfully added the two point conversion to tie the
game.
The
prospect of overtime was looming, but disaster struck for the
Rams when they tried to kill the game off in the final seconds
after a long bomb was picked off by
Gary
Orr, who ran almost the full length of the field, but was stopped
on around the ten-yard line.
And
with three seconds on the clock, the Hawks threw in their final
card when Tom Chapman split the uprights to put the Hawks in front
with just three seconds remaining.
