DEWSBURY HERE WE COME
Clyde
Valley Hawks v North Lanarkshire Rams Pt 2
After an opening
drive from both teams, lady luck smiled on the Hawks on a Rams punt
attempt when a high snap sent the ball soaring over Sean Murphy’s
head and was eventually downed at the Rams 11 yard line.
Despite their
lack of numbers, the Hawks are always dangerous inside any opponents
red zone and they made they breakthrough on third down, when Gary
Clark bulldozed his way through for the opening score.
The Hawks appeared
to have blown the conversion attempt with a poor snap, but the ball
was retrieved by Tam Chapman, who found some space in the corner
of the end zone to make it 8-0 for the reigning Champions.
The battle intensified
during the remainder of a hotly contested first half with the Hawks
threatening the Rams goal line when Quarterback Ritchie Campbell
hooked up with Chapman for a 72 yard gain which was stopped at the
visitor’s 12 yard line just outside the two minute warning.
But a couple
of penalty calls and a strong stand off from the Rams defense forced
the Hawks to go for a field goal attempt from Mark McKenzie which
was blocked by Greg McIntyre.
With
seconds of the half remaining, the Rams tried to gain a psychological
edge over the Hawks and came close in the last play before the break,
when quarterback Kevin McElhinney took to the air with a long pass
to James McCoy, who finished up as meat inside a Clyde Valley Sandwich.
But despite
being under pressure, the Rams receiver still managed to pull in
a terrific catch just short of the goal line.
Surprisingly,
the play was scratched off with the officials ruling a pass interference
penalty with the Hawks still having on to their eight point lead.
