HAWKS TOO STRONG FOR BATTLING TIGERS PT 2

The Hawks got a break early in the second quarter when Tigers Quarterback, Craig Wilson fired a deep pass, but was picked off by Nikki Wigley.

Hann then appeared to capitalise when he picked off Receiver, Richie Campbell inside the Tigers redzone.

But despite their dominance of Youth game in recent years, discipline has always been a major headache for the Hawks who often give up unnecessary penalties.

And they lost some of their momentum when they conceded 25 yards on the next three plays.

Then inside the two minute warning Clyde Valley tried a fake field goal attempt which failed, resulting in a turnover on downs.

But the momentum then dramatically swung back to the home side, when Wigley made is second interception of the day, taking the ball to the Tigers 4 yard line.

Then minutes later, a Quarterback sneak from Hann from a few inches out put the Hawks 14 points ahead at the break.

Things looked promising for the Tigers at the start of the second half when Craig Wilson handed the ball to his brother Kyle who gained some ground down the far side to the half way line.

Then Iain “Sparky” Dick made some more yards down the far side, but the drive unfortunately stalled at the Hawks 40, resulting in a turnover on downs.

The Hawks continued to shoot themselves in the foot, giving up more needless penalties, but they managed to get themselves out of trouble with a big completion to Chapman to the Tigers 29 yard line.

Despite making further progress on the next play, Clyde Valley give up some more needless penalties, starting the final period at the Tigers 15 yard line.

And after having a touchdown chalked off, the Tigers defense got possession back on fourth and goal, when a Hann pass was batted down by Thomas MacMillan.

As the final minutes ticked away, the Tigers continued to battle hard, trying to take something from the game.

Then inside the two minutes warning, the visitors were further behind when a sack on Craig Wilson resulted in a fumble recovery from Clark, who took the ball back up field to another six points, which was converted to make it 22 unanswered points for Clyde Valley.

With seconds remaining, the Tigers tried to snatch something from the game at the death and were good field position after an excellent kick of return from young Sparky.

But the game was brought to an abrupt halt when the return also resulted in a leg break for Hawks Kenny Reid, who was taken to hospital.

In the end the Hawks deserved their win, but if they had maintained some discipline, then it could have been a more convincing score line.

But don’t take anything away from the Tigers, last years BYAFA Plate Winners. The made the Hawks fight for everything they could get.

And even though they failed to register any points then it should not be took long before we see a much closer contest between these two teams

As for the Hawks, despite the win, the day was soured with the loss of Reid, who was making his first start for the team and will now be out for the rest of season.

And Head Coach Steve "Duck" Collins insists that despite the loss of their player, they are determined to keep the winning run going all the way through to another championship final.

He said: "With the 2 starting running backs available for our future games we should be in a better position to maintain our unbeaten run and hopefully we can win the title for Kenny."
