The Inverclyde Raiders getting in some pre match practiseINVERCLYDE BOWL

Dateline 2004-08-28

It was the penultimate showcase of the British Junior Kitted Football scene, where Inverclyde Raiders came into this long awaited home fixture knowing that they had already booked their place in the Championship final in Birmingham on September 11th.

But there was still the Conference title to take care of.

And the pre match billing suggested the scene was set for a classic showdown amongst the 6 competing sides.

What the organisers had not bargained for was the teeming rain (well this is Greenock after all – what would you expect).

And the fact that three of the competing sides, PA Knights and MK Pathfinders and the Merseyside Predators decided not to make the journey up north, irrespective of the fact that the Raiders had travelled to all the English tournaments – making a mockery of this being a British League.

But the show had to go on. And the Raiders k new that if they won the Inverclyde Bowl, then the league title was safely in their pocket as well.

However "Helmets off" to the Yorkshire Rams and the Lancashire Wolverines, who made the effort to make the journey north and who played their part in an excellent afternoon of football, along with guest side, Glasgow Tigers.

Even though the kick off was set for eleven o clock, there was a hold up to the procedures due to the unavailability of referees and BYAFA Officials, still trying to negotiate their way through the Greenock traffic.

But after forty minutes the Tigers and the Rams took to the field for the first game, leaving the Raiders to keep themselves occupied waiting for the Wolverines bus to finally turn up.
