Young Tigers Top Table

Last week saw the Glasgow Tigers host their annual junior kitted tournament.

Coming into the tournament things could not be any tighter at the top of the table with the top 3 teams; Highland Wildcats, Glasgow Tigers and Clyde Valley Falcons, being separated by only 2 points.

The Tigers were hopeful that they could continue the good form that they showed in wining the Kingdom Bowl, but would need to do so without the assistance of their top scorer for the season.

The Tigers were drawn in Group B got off to a great start winning their opening game against the Northern Wildcats 61 - 13. Game MVP went to David Fallon for his outstanding performance scoring 10 points and acting as a constant threat, making numerous catches to keep the Tigers offence on the field.

The next game for the Tigers was against Fife Fire who have made significant progress in their opening season. Fife have steadily improved and recorded their best result of the season at their home tournament last month when they lost narrowly to the Tigers in the final.

The Tigers made sure of a place in the final by defeating Fife 38 points to 6.

The main event in Group A saw the Clyde Valley Falcons take on the Highland Wildcats for the remaining place in the final. This was a close fought affair and the Falcons proved themselves to have the superior firepower, winning the game 45 - 31.

Any Tigers vs. Falcons game is usually tough to call, as they are inevitably close encounters. This coupled with the fact that it was the tournament final meant we were in for a good game.

It was the Tigers who seemed to seize the initiative early on with touchdowns from Andrew Steen and Marc Donald giving them a 12-point lead. The Falcons however were came right back in to the game on their next possession reducing the deficit to 6 points.

Both teams traded scores and at half time the Tigers lead 25-12.

The second half followed a similar pattern with the Tigers scoring first due to some excellent work on defence, forcing and recovering a fumble in the endzone.

Throughout the half the Falcons managed to keep the Tigers under pressure as and were able to do enough to stay in contention right to the end of the game.

Unfortunately at 14 points down when trying to stage a late comeback, LB Marc Donald made an excellent interception giving the Tigers a short field and the chance to put the game out of the reach of the Falcons.

This happened on the next play when Donald ran the ball in for the final TD of the game. The completed conversion made the final score 51-31 to the Tigers.

This win means that the Tigers are clear at the top of the Scottish Conference and in a strong position to retain their title of Scottish Champions.

The final tournament of the season will be hosted by the Edinburgh Wolves on the 18th August and should be a great encounter with the top 3 teams battling it out for the 2 British final spots.
