LONGHORNS ROUND UP LOTTERY
AWARD...
American Football
in Glasgow and Lanarkshire has received a £9,850 cash injection
thanks to Awards for All.
The Lanarkshire
Longhorns Youth American Football Club are delighted to have
received the grant allowing them to purchase new player safety
equipment and official game shirts.
Longhorns’ Head
Coach David Orr said “A great deal of hard work has gone in to
establishing the team on the British American Football scene so to
be recognised by Awards for All in this way is incredibly
gratifying. More importantly it provides us with a real opportunity
to grow youth football in the Glasgow and Lanarkshire areas and to
bring the benefits of our sport to even more young people,
regardless of personal circumstance”.
Vice-captain Ben
Filmer, 17, added “All the players have been training hard to help
get the team up and running. The Glasgow Tigers and Clyde Valley
clubs have been great and lent us older equipment so we could get
straight in to competitive action but this grant will mean we have a
long term future and our own separate team identity.”
The club was
established in late 2009 as a joint venture by Clyde Valley and
Glasgow Tigers American Football Clubs to provide a pathway for
players coming up through both clubs’ highly successful junior
set-ups. Currently the only Scottish youth team participating in the
British American Football Association’s Community League, the
Longhorns (aged 16 – 19) compete against teams from the north of
England.
The diversity of
the different playing positions in American Football means that
there are opportunities for everyone, providing an exciting,
positive way for young people to channel their energies.
The Longhorns train
every Sunday 10am – 12 alternating between Cambuslang Rugby Club and
Beltane Playing Fields, Wishaw and are always on the lookout for new
players, volunteers and supporters. A flood of recent enquiries
regarding a potential cheerleading squad means the club is also on
the lookout for an experienced coach / dance teacher interested in
bringing some ‘glee’ onto the Longhorns sideline!
