Longhorns Still Looking for First Win

Lanarkshire Longhorns v Wolverines

Lanarkshire Longhorns American Football  team travelled to Blackburn on Sunday 8th May looking for their first win of the season against Lancashire Wolverine Colts. The Colts however have appeared in the past two British National Finals so the Longhorns had quite a challenge ahead of them against such strong opposition.

The Longhorns struggled to get their offence going in the first quarter, giving up two turnovers and although the defence put up another tough display, the Colts eventually registered their first passing touchdown to go 6 points ahead. The second quarter saw the Longhorns getting their Offence going, but despite coming within a few yards of the Colts endzone twice, they were unable to register a score. Lancashire doubled their advantage with another touchdown pass and went in at halftime 12-0 ahead.

The Longhorns were joined on the trip by Youth team, the Clyde Valley Falcons, who played a half-time exhibition match of 5-5 football against local side, the Burnley Tornadoes. The game finished 12-12 and gave a preview of some of the talent that the Longhorns and Colts will look to draw from in the seasons ahead.

The second half saw both teams’ Defences come to the fore with the Longhorns putting up a terrific display to limit the Colts attack, sacking the Quarterback twice and regaining possession after an impressive goal line stand.

Lanarkshire’s William McLaughlin then brought the side right back into the game with an unstoppable 78 yard sprint for a touchdown to bring the score to 12-6. The Longhorns hopes of getting back on level terms were dashed a few plays later when the Colts threw their third touchdown, putting the game beyond reach for the Lanarkshire side despite one last trip to the Lancashire redzone.

The Longhorns now look to prepare for their first home game of the season when they host Gateshead Senators at Beltane playing fields in Wishaw on Sunday 15th May.

The game kicks off at 12.00 noon and promises to be an exciting contest, with the Longhorns looking to avenge their opening day defeat in Gateshead.
