The Lanarkshire Longhorns Youth American
football took to the field at the weekend against the Inverclyde
Phoenix in Inverclyde for Part 2 of a home and away game friendies .
The Longhorns won the toss but elected to give the
ball to the Nix. The defence took up whee they had left off at the
last meeting Andrew Steen picking off an attempted pass .
It was then the turn of the Longhorns but they
also faultered as the hand off between Alex Ferguson QB and FB Scot
Frame was fumbled .
With the defece hits like charging Bulls you Mark
(Spanky) Rielly stopped the Nix QB dead in his tracks with a
bone jarring hit .This forced a passing attempe from the Nix but was
only to be picked off by William McLaughlan intercepted a tipped
pass and behind some charging defencive blocking ran the ball back
to the Nix 30 yard line .
The offence did move the ball but were halted on
the 10 yard line . The field goal attempt taken by David
McInally scraped the wrong side of the upright to hand the ball over
again .
After a 4 n out drive and a great sack by Kyle
Greer (LB) the Longhorns took over again and although steen and
frame notched up over 100 yards the Nix defence bent but were not
broken.
The second half saw the Longhorns begin to take
control with cotches from Matthew Kennedy at crutial times in the
game to keep drives going
Longhorns went for a field goal but it was charged
down by the Nix and almost returned .
By now the Longhorns defence lead by Steven Munro
,had control on the defence and had all but shut down the nix attack
with sacks from Sean Fallon, Kyle Greer and picks from Andrew
Steen and David McInally .
The Longhorns running game finally came together
when steen got to the outside behind a great block from Jack
Findlatar and sprinted the final thirty yards to the endzone to
break the deadlock. The extra point was incomplete .
Later in the the game again through great running
from Steen he went to the endzone for his second TD of the day . But
again the extra point was charged down.
The game ended with David McInally forcing a Nix
fumble and that was the final play of the day .
The Longhorns would like to thank the Nix for the
two friendly games and wish them success in the future .
They would also like to thank the parents who
traveled through to watch on the bank holiday .
