Longhorns Stampede on Senators

Lanarkshire Longhorns Junior American Football team turned around their
slow start to the season with an emphatic win over Gateshead Senators at
Beltane , Wishaw on Sunday 15th May. After 2 tough games away
in the North of England the players were desperate to get a home game
under their belts and show what they’re really made of.
They didn’t disappoint, scoring 2 passing touchdowns through Quarterback
Ally Ferguson and Tight End Craig Samuel. Despite having a touchdown
over-ruled by the officials, Running Back Andrew Steen had an excellent
outing, leading the Offence with 151 rushing yards and 1 reception.
Not to be outdone, the Defence made their mark on the game, running up
54 tackles, 3 turnovers and a touchdown score by
Ben Filmer after Mike Orr forced
a fumble in the opposition endzone. Gateshead scored 2 touchdowns
in reply but were always playing catch up after the Longhorns had scored
on their opening drive.
Once more the new talent for the Longhorns made their mark, rookie
Andrew Reid kicking 3 PAT conversions and fellow rookie Steven Sinclair
making a fumble recovery for one of the Longhorns key turnovers in the
game.
The game finished 24-14 in
favour of the Longhorns moving them towards the middle of the table in
the BAFACL Junior North
Division.
The team can now look forward to their next game against Manchester
Titans on 5th June with renewed confidence.
The Longhorns notched up 2 wins against the Manchester side last
season and will be looking to continue that trend in 2011.
