KEEPING
IT IN THE FAMILY

The
Mac Football Dynasty (L
to R)Craig Colin and Graeme
It is the dream of every father to have their son
following in their father’s footsteps.
But I don’t think that over 20 years ago when
Colin Macmillan was pounding the turf of his local public park as
an offensive lineman with the now “Legendary” Glasgow
Lions, it would the start of a family tradition in the love of America’
top sporting export.
In a playing career that lasted from 1980 - 1988,
45 year old Colin played alongside some of the top players in UK
including Scottish Claymores Receiver, Scott Couper.
During his career Big Mac ( Sorry but I could not
resist it) achieved a high level of football awards including 3
runners up medals in the British Championships and loved his playing
career so much that he decided to put something back into the sport
as an assistant coach with the Clyde Valley Hawks.
And it was with the Hawks that 18 year old Craig
decided to take over the family helmet and pads, but as a running
back.
He has enjoyed nothing but success in the space
of two years with the Hawks, Clyde Valley Hawks (16 to 19 year olds)
they have been Scottish Champions twice and British Champions this
year.
The Hawks are undefeated in 2 years and are now
looking forward to their biggest test in their short history in
defending their British title after losing so many of last year’s
players due to age limits .
During career also caught the attention of the Scottish
Youth squad, but was denied the chance to represent his country
due to work commitments
Craig admits that it was his father’s interest
in the sport that got him involved in the first place:
He said: “I really enjoy the skill of speed
and strength combined in this game as I enjoy contact sports .I
always liked watching dad and when the chance came thought I would
follow in his foot steps "
This year, the Macmillan strengthened their family
ties with the sport when they Hawks added a new team to their organisation
with the formation of their new junior side, the Clyde Valley Falcons,
who are currently dominating the SAU/Pop Warner Scotland League.
Graeme aged 15 is from Dunure in Ayrshire plays
receiver for the Falcons and at the moment is the top scorer in
the S.A.U/Pop Warner league with 8 touch downs in just three games.
The Falcons are undefeated this year
so far after three games and in similar ways to his older brother,
Graeme, decided to try the game out for himself after watching his
Craig playing with the Hawks.
And even though he has plenty of time on his side, he hopes that
one day to follow in the footsteps of his hero, Scott Couper.
Graeme says "I really enjoyed watching Scot Cooper playing
for the Claymores and would like to do the same if I could some
day”
Colin is the head coach for the Falcons and is delighted to see
that his sons share his enthusiasm for the sport.
He said: "Its great to see them playing a sport that I played
and enjoying it so much. It also gives us a lot of time together
as a family with the same interests.
The Hawks and the Falcons as well as British Senior League side
East Kilbride Pirates, train at Wishaw Sports Centre.
