NIGHTHAWKS TOO STRONG FOR TIGERS
Glasgow Tigers 12 Merseyside Nighthawks 16
After a week of recording
soaring temperatures, this was an afternoon of 10 minute monsoons, plus
a barrage of hailstones thrown in for good measure.
Welcome to Summer
Football!
But for the new look
Glasgow Tigers, this was another dent in their rebuilding process having
been overpowered in a hard fought contest at a muddy Cambuslang Rugby
Club.
Having struggled for
numbers throughout the 2006 season, hopes have been high of better fortunes
this year, with a number of their successful youth side stepping up to
the senior game.
And despite a spirited
and battling performance, it was the strength and experience of the English
side that came through on the day, coming from behind twice to edged out
the Tigers, leaving them still searching for their first win of the campaign.
Prior to kick off,
Mother Nature decided to provide some unwelcome pre match extras with
wind, heavy rain and hailstones to boot.
With many people thinking
of running for, cover, they brave souls on the sidelines and on the field
dug in and finally got underway.
And after just three
plays, former star youth, college rusher and now starting to make his
mark on the senior game, Ian “Sparky Dick got the Tigers off to
the perfect start after just three plays sprinting 45 yards for the opening
touchdown.
However it was not
until the second quarter, the Nighthawks were starting to pose a series
threat to the Tigers endzone.
The
visitors were soon starting to motor up field when Barry Murphy powered
through the defensive wall to create a new set of downs inside the Glasgow
half.
Murphy continued to
add to his stats with another run up field, taking them to the Tigers
20 yard line.
On the next play,
Quarterback, Tim Parr got himself out of trouble, managing to hang on
to a bad snap of the ball, scrambling clear to get a pass off to a diving
45 ( name to be confirmed)
Minutes later it was
a last stand off for the Tigers deep in their own goal line. And on 4th
and goal with one yard to goal, their reward for their hard work paid
off when Parr’s pass, finished as incomplete.
