SAU POP WARNER OPENS ITS DOORS

Britain’s only officially sanctioned Pop Warner
League, SAU Pop Warner League Scotland, will open its doors to the
public this Sunday ( July 4th) with an open fun day at Beltane playing
fields, right next to Wilshaw’s Sport Centre.
After months of delay, five junior teams finally
contested the 2003 league campaign back in February of this year,
attracting a lot of interest from the States, culminating in a dramatic
34-28 victory for the North Lanarkshire Rams over local rivals and
tournament favourites, Clyde Valley Falcons.
Now the under 16 kitted League will be finally up
to date when up to twice the number of teams from the first league
will contest the 2004 season in August.
And it is expected that some of these teams will
be on show during the fun day which kicks off at 12pm.
SAU/Pop Warner League President, Colin Macmillan
said that the day will have something for all the family.
“The opening will be done by Councillor Sam
Love and Scott Couper,” he said. “We will play exhibition
games and have games for the kids we will also have cheerleaders
at it too.”
As well as the new league campaign an invitation
has been received by the league to send a Scottish All Star side
to the Florida at the end of the year, for an exhibition game as
part of the warm up to the Official Pop Warner Super Bowl.
And whilst there remains some uncertainty of the
future of the Youth Kitted game in Scotland, with two teams withdrawing
from the British league earlier this year, Macmillan reckons that
the future of the Pop Warner league in Scotland has never looked
better.
He said: “”Everything is looking positive
for Pop Warner. This first final was a fantastic game and it was
good that every came together to play a final that promoted football,
good football at that.”
“And for this next season we hope to have
even more teams in the SAU/Pop Warner League.”
