Another
rough day for the roughriders
It
was another day for the Caledonian Roughriders today (Sunday 30th)
going down 38-8 to fellow BCAFL Rookies, Sheffield Hallam University
Warriors.
Both sides came into the game searching for their
first win of the season.
And having scored a two point safety early in the
first quarter, the power and strength of the English squad proved
to be too much for the Scots.
The English powered their way to an 18-0 half time
lead thanks to touchdowns from Chris Jones and Charlie Bradley.
Then despite a hard fought second half performance
from the Roughriders, the English side stepped up the pace and soared
ahead with scores from Runningbacks, K-C Farquarharson, Quarterback
Phil Wood and Sean Heyward.
But English were denied a clean sheet when Caledonia
got some reward for their hard fought performance with a consolation
score in the fourth quarter
Both sides came into the game seeking their first
win of the season and Warriors Head Coach John Edley was relieved
that after a series of close games they finally managed to break
their duck.
He said: “Our team finally came of age which
was good to see, we had been threatening to do that performance
for a while.”
“I have seen it before, but for those guys,
it is a fantastic feeling. I’m really please and proud of
every one of them.
“Caledonia are an excellent team they came
and gave us a game, which we expected.”
“I have never played a slack Scottish team
yet. I knew that they would hit us hard and they did for the whole
game. The fact was that our training finally paid off.”
“I was partially disappointed for letting
the score in at the end and losing the shutout. But Caldonia did
deserver that for their effort during the game. I can’t take
that away from them.”
“We have got a strong running game. We had
a few guys missing on our offensive line. “
“I did not really want to play this year,
but I am eligible so it is a case of managing to be able to lead
them a bit better through the middle and bring them along a bit
better but they have gelled as a unit."
Added the Warriors boss: “The next game is,
with no disrespect to Caledonia, is a grudge match for us against
our cross town rivals, Sheffield Uni. There is so much rivalry between
the two you would not believe."
“I did not believe it until I became Head
Coach. It is almost like Celtic and Rangers to us.”
“We played them at the start of the season
and lost by four points and we are hoping now to put our first win
past them."
“This result will be a spur for the guys and
will give them the confidence that they need to play this game."
“The team is in its first year this confidence
will take them forward and hopefully we could make a late run for
the play offs."
