It is good to see that some of the most popular singers of yesteryear still have their sizable fan base, who follow them, pay a fortune, to go and swoon in front of them.
Therefore with this in mind, the news that Donny Osmond and Cliff Richard are doing separate summer tours of castles in the UK has prompted The Scribbler to check out their current DVD’s of their live performances and see just what the audiences have waiting for them
This particular concert sees our hero on the final night of his 2003 tour at the Hammersmith Apollo in London.
There are those who won’t need reminding just how good a live entertainer Donny is. However there will be also an age group who wouldn’t want to look silly in front of their friends (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE).
Therefore any people who still have that kind of feeling towards Mr Osmond would be denying themselves what actually turns out be a really enjoyable concert covering all stages of what has turned out to be an amazing up and down career!!!
The set consists of tracks from his Somewhere in Time album (produced by Gary Barlow of Take That Fame).
The Album of show tunes called This is the moment and of course a fair selection of the hits that made Donny and his brothers the household names that they are, even after all of these years
The highlights of the show for me were the reworking of the old hits like Too Young, Twelfth of Never, Young Love and many more.
All these songs featured in the show were given and unplugged acoustic make over.
Puppy Love was given a psuedo jazz backing and these reworkings suited the songs very well.
The best of these of these revisits was kept for the encore.
Donny virtually flies down the stairs of the stage for a terrific version of Crazy Horses which to me is a classic rock track.
However the downside of this show is the tracks from the Somewhere in Time album which is not that it’s performed badly, it’s just dare I say it, bland
The reworking of Luck be a Lady Tonight! is another area of the show that fails to impress, where Donny is seen tipping his Rat Pack style hat to a mild funky backing (Yes it is Ok to say Funky) of this classic song from Guys and Dolls and it just ruins it.
However this is just one minor blip on what is a value for money DVD, including the obligatory extras of an interview with Donny and an insight of what is like touring with the great man,
It’s thoroughly recommended!!!
