It is regarded as the World’s Greatest Musical – but that was not what the critics were saying when the musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables made its debut in London’s Barbican Theatre back in 1995.
The audience loved it and got their justified standing ovation, but the writers reckoned that is nothing more than sacrilege for people to mess around with one of top literary works.
19 years on, the hacks have more than eaten their words. Les Miserables continues to pack in the crowds with over 70 different productions being staged over the world.
And what is set to be a must have DVD for Musical fans this Christmas comes a two edition set that brings you the best of Les Miserables, The Musical.
DVD One brings you the special tenth anniversary concert that took place in the Albert Hall taking you through the whole story, minus the scenic back drops and the backing of Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, featuring famous cast members including Michael Ball.
And if you fancy singing along with some of the show’s memorable songs like, “One More Day” , “Bring Him Home" and “On My Own” to name just a few, there is the added bonus of the song lyrics to run alongside the show.
On DVD Two there is the chance to watch a special TV documentary on the history of the show, right back to its humble origins with the shows original composers, Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil.
Learn how after its debut at the Barbican back in 1985, why Cameron MacKintosh decided to transfer the show to the West End, where it then proceed to re write the history of Musical Theatre.
And we also get a special look at other countries production of what has become a musical classic in some interesting choice of venues.
You will see that with a classic musical such as this, you could play it absolutely anywhere.
