This 1952 gem sees Irish-American boxer Sean Thornton (John Wayne) coming back to rebuild his life after his last fight met with a disastrous end. Although any thoughts he had about making a quiet entry soon disappears when he meets his new guidor and mentor Michaeleen (who is played brilliantly by Barry Fitzgerald).

The story that follows is a thoroughly enjoyable mix of comedy, romance and action.

Laughs comes from among others, the afore-mentioned Mr Fitzgerald and a great performance from Ward Bond as a “man of the cloth” that although approachable, is not the kind of man you would want to” cross”(excuse the pun).

The love interest comes in the form of Maureen O’Hara (Mary-Kate Danaher) who proves once again that, unlike today's true stars can look good and can have no questions raised as regarding their acting ability.

Movie action comes in the big bullying form of Wayne’s regular on screen sparring partner, Victor McLaglen (Will Danaher, Mary-Kate’s brother who doesn’t take too kindly to the town’s new arrival. This friction culminates in one the Big Screen’s best ever fight scenes between Messrs Wayne and McLaglen that takes in the whole village!!!!!!!

Its probably safe to say you’ve seen this film on TV at some time or another and in  these present times of multi-million dollar blockbusters, it's good to see that these (rightly-named) classics still come over strong today.

This is a DVD which can be watched over and over again without losing its appeal.
