Young Hawks Revell
in Team Scotland Success

Saturday just before Christmas saw 14 Clyde Valley Hawks players travel to Glasgow as part of the Team Scotland squad to participate in a friendly against Gateshead Senators.

This match was the warm up game before Team Scotland take on Team England on 24th February.

After a scoreless first quarter where both sides traded possessions Gateshead opened the scoring in the 2nd quarter when Scotland fumbled a snap which was recovered in the endzone for 6 points.

They were unable to score the extra points. This was a wake up call for Team Scotland who pulled back some of the deficit when Derek Russell slotted over the field goal.

After some readjustment at half time Team Scotland came out far more organised and quickly added to the score.

Their first TD came from Qb Kennedy and the sure foot of Derek Russell scored the extra point.

The Scotland defence did not allow Gateshead any progress with Hawks trio Blake Kyle, Scott Findlay, Karl McCran and Mark Murphy swarming over the Senators offence. David Carney intercepted a wayward Gateshead pass and sprinted up field only to be downed 2 yards from the end zone.

Scotland rumbled over the goal line to add to the score with another Qb sneak thanks to a big push from the O Line. Gateshead fought on and never gave up trying but Scotland was too powerful for them.

They added a further touchdown before the end of the 3rd quarter. By now the Senators were showing signs of battle weariness.

Scotland’s defence put more points on the board when the down the Gateshead QB in his own end zone for a safety.

In the 4th quarter Hawks players combined to add to the score when David Yates blocked a rampaging defender to free Graeme MacMillan to sprint 45 yards to the end zone for the TD.

The extra points were scored when QB David Orr kept the ball and barrelled into the end zone to bring the final score to 29 to 6 in favour of Team Scotland.

The Most Valuable player of the match was Hawks Blake Kyle.
