Glasgow Tigers
Claim Scottish Crown

On Sunday 25th of
June the Glasgow Tigers hosted the final Junior Kitted tournament of the
season.
It was excellent
conditions for football and the tournament was well attended with 6 teams
on show, Glasgow Tigers A, Glasgow Tigers B, Northern Wildcats, Highland
Wildcats, Clyde Valley Falcons and the Paisley Panthers.
Tigers A came into
the tournament in a very strong position needing to finish in third place
or above to secure the Scottish title.
Their first opposition
was the Northern Wildcats, who unfortunately had to forfeit the game due
to injuries to key personnel mid-way into the first half. This meant victory
over the Paisley Panthers would secure a spot in the final and the Scottish
Championship for the Tigers.
This was achieved
in style with a 58 - 6 victory in which the Tigers defence contributed
14 points through 2 interception returns by Marc Donald and a safety by
Andrew Baillie.
A
three touchdown performance from Tiger’s running back Jack Miller
earned him a well-deserved MVP award for the game.
In the other group
both Clyde Valley and the Highland Wildcats won their opening games against
the Tiger’s B squad.
This meant that the
encounter between Clyde Valley and the Highland Wildcats was of great
importance as it would determine which of the teams would join Tigers
A in the tournament final, and more importantly who would finish second
in the league, earning them a place at the British Finals.
This was a hard fought
game with both teams clearly giving their all. The Wildcats ran out eventual
winners with a 35 - 22 victory, helped greatly by an excellent performance
by Angus Mackintosh, who led by example on both offence and defence.
In the final the Tigers
started well, returning an interception for a touchdown on the Wildcat’s
opening drive. Scott Macintosh scored the 2-point conversion to increase
the lead.
Both teams traded
scores for the remainder of the half leaving the Tigers with a 2-point
lead at the half. The game continued in the same manner in the second
half with both teams scoring in turn.
It was the Tigers
superior ability to convert that gave them the edge in the game, completing
4 of 5, 2-point attempts compared to the Wildcat’s 1 of 5, that
saw them end the game with a 38 – 32 victory.
The Tournament MVP
award was shared between Glasgow’s Jack Miller and Angus Mackintosh
of the Highland Wildcats.
