Sunday
15th Feb: Glasgow Tigers set themselves up with a mouth watering
top of the table clash this coming Sunday against reigning British
Champions Stirling Clansmen following another resounding 70-0 victory
against a battling Roughriders side.
Both teams have
guaranteed their place in the forthcoming play offs with Stirling’s
28-12 victory over Newcastle Raiders, but today’s victory
over the Roughriders has moved the Tigers to the top of the Northern
Conference table on points difference with this Sunday’s game
to play to round off the regular season.
Following their
74-0 demolition of their local rivals at Springburn Park seven days
ago, no one expected any shock results in the return match between
one of the league’s oldest sides and the college rookies.
Once again,
the size and depth of experience in the Tigers squad proved to be
too much for the Roughriders, who also had to cope with an endless
amount of unnecessary distractions to their preparations coming
into the game.
But the events
of the past week seemed to do nothing more than toughen up their
resolve and rejuvenate their team spirit.
And even though
it was another resounding victory for the Tigers, it would be fair
to say that it they had to work much harder in order to earn their
points.
Lady luck smiled on the
home side early in the first quarter when a high snap on a Cally
punt attempt saw the ball roll into the endzone for a two point
safety.
The Roughriders went
further behind on the resulting kick off which was returned down
the near side by Kenny McPhail for the opening touchdown, which
was converted by Andy Hall to put the Tigers 10 points up.
Disaster then struck
for the visitors who fumbled possession away on their next drive,
which was recovered by the Tigers at 25 yard line.
Two plays later, Hall
blasted through a gap in the Roughriders wall for another 6 points.
