As few weeks ago, Clyde Valley Hawks ran up a
comfortable 20-6 victory against Glasgow Tigers. At the weekend, revenge was sweet for the Tigers who managed to
reverse that score with interest on their own turf.
The Blackhawks, who came into the game with definite
edge over the Tigers in terms of league standings, needed to regain some
momentum following their 35-0 home loss against league leaders, West
Coast Trojans.
The Tigers faced a much tougher task, but were
determined to end their regular season on a high and rediscover that
winning feeling, starting with their first victory in over a month.
It was a dreary start, the Tigers stepped up their
work rate, driving towards the Clyde Valley goal line and made the
breakthrough when Ronnie “Pebbles” Gaffin battered through from a short
distance out for the opening touchdown.
The stalemate continued going at the start of the
second quarter despite a large no of turnovers from each side. But with less than two minutes of the half remaining, the
Blackhawks blew the momentum of forcing a turnover by surrendering
possession back to home side minutes later.
And were promptly punished when Gaffin showed great
determination, working his way through a mass of bodies for a second
touchdown.
The Tigers stepped up the energy level during the
opening drive of the second half driving towards the Clyde Valley
endzone, who appeared to be struggling to contain the Tigers running
game.
So it was no surprise to see Gaffin from a short
distance out, pushed himself that extra yard for his touchdown hat
trick.
The Blackhawks managed to weather the storm holding
off the Tigers attack until the dying minutes of the third quarter when
Duncan Black exposed a gap in the Clyde Valley defensive wall and
nipped through to make it 24 unanswered points.
Going into the final period, the game was out of the
visitor’s reach, but they continued to battle hard, determined to take
something out of the game.
However the visitors continued to look badly exposed
at the back and went further behind when Black met little
resistance as he nipped through for a second touchdown.
The Blackhawks continued to battle hard and take some
shine off what turned out to be a one-sided victory when a wide open
Colin Mooney pulled in a consolation touchdown catch
