And after an ineffective
Tigers opening drive, the Hawks made a positive start on their opening
series when Andy Reynolds made some big strides up field, taking the ball
to the Glasgow 34 yard line.
But a holding penalty
almost cancelled out their good work, moving them back towards their end
of the field with the drive eventually running out of steam, with both
teams still searching for the decisive break through with little success
at the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers soon found
themselves in pressure at the start of the second quarter when Tigers
Quarterback Kris Kennedy was sacked by George Sloan.
But the Glasgow Triggerman
had his side back on the move again when he picked off a virtually unmarked
Derek Russell, who moved the chains for the home side to the Hawks twenty
seven yard line.
Then on the next play,
the Tigers got their decisive breakthrough when Dick sprinted down the
far side for the opening touchdown.
Indecision from the
Hawks on the resulting kick off resulted in the visitors starting off
a new drive on their own twelve yard line.
There
troubles then continued when over exuberance from the Tigers defense,
resulted in Hawks Quarterback David Orr being on the receiving end of
a WWF style challenge, being thrown to the ground, picking up a severe
neck injury and as a result, took no further part in the game.
Then when play resumed,
stand in Quarterback Darren Brownlee had his own problems to deal with
when he was intercepted by David McLaughlin, who after a bit of Keystone
Cops chasing was finally brought to the ground with little gain.
The Tigers drive stalled
and were forced to punt away possession but the Hawks soon found themselves
in trouble again when Dean Jardine’s punt was downed at the Clyde
Valley one yard line.
And under heavy defensive
pressure the Hawks fumbled away possession with Phil Forrest picking up
the loose ball taking it over the goal line for a second touchdown.
