Having edged out the Tigers at Dundee’s ground earlier
in the season; revenge was very much on the Glasgow side’s minds.
But the Hurricanes were operating from a different script
right from the opening kick off, when Fraser Thomson blitzed through the
helpless Tigers players returning the ball 85 yards for the opening touchdown,
which was easily converted by Mark Craig.
Both teams immediately proceeded to tighten on their defenses
but the Tigers eventually got themselves back in the game finally breaking
through the Dundee rearguard midway through the first period which ended
with William "Kojak" McLauchlan dumping the ball through the
middle to Ally Choat for six points.
And after McLauchlan successfully split the uprights for
the conversion attempt, the signs were starting to emerge that we could
be on for a repeat of their last close encounter at Tayside.
The Tigers appeared to have lost their moment on their
next drive when they fumbled away possession yards from the goal line
on their next drive.
But following heavy pressure from the home defense, the
Hurricanes were forced to punt away possession, with the ball falling
into the hands of Ryan Hunter, who turned on the speed down the near side
with little resistance, taking the ball in to the endzone, giving the
Tiger the lead for the first time.
Things continued to look promising for the Tigers early
in the second quarter when Quarterback Bruce Thomson was picked off by
Rob Campbell.
But the Tiger failed to capitalise and soon found themselves
in trouble on the next Dundee drive when Bruce Thomson caught the home
defense off guard firing a long missile to Brother Fraser for a 65 yard
completion which he took all the way to the endzone for his second touchdown,
which was once again converted by Craig, giving the visitors a one point
lead.
The Glasgow side’s troubles continued at the end
of their next drive and another special teams breakdown, when Aberdonian
receiver, Darren Henderson returned a Tigers punt, weaving his way through
to record his first score in Dundee colours, taking an eight point cushion
going into the break.
The Tigers game plan appeared to be heading for meltdown
when Quarterback McLauchlan was picked off by Fraser Thomson, who returned
the ball back to the Glasgow 20 yard line.
But the Glasgow defense turned up the pressure at the
right time with the Dundee Quarterback being caught on the blind side
with a crunching tackle from Robert Mann, forcing a fumble which was recovered
by John Paul Broughton.
The turnover appeared to inject a fresh impetus to the
Tigers offense, which moved slowly towards the Hurricanes goal line.
Only this time it was the visiting defense to turn up
the heat, blitzing the Tigers triggerman, McLauchlan sending him crashing
to the ground.
The visitors continued to force the Glasgow side back
towards their own half, forcing them to eventually punt away possession.
Dundee tried to hit back with an effective response but
they continued to find Glasgow a tough nut to crack and they soon found
themselves in trouble when Bruce Thomson gave up another interception
to Hunter who sprinted down the far side for another score, reducing the
deficit to just two points.
Things seemed to be going erratic for the Hurricanes when
Campbell got in the way of another Bruce Thomson pass.
But the Tigers were having to make some adjustments of
their own on offense with back up Quarterback Ally Choat taking over from
the injured McLauchlan, who had been forced on the sidelines with a recurring
shoulder injury.
The home side were making little headway on their next
possession, but an excellent punt put some added pressure on the Hurricanes
having to start their new drive from their one yard line.
The Hurricanes went three and out and had to try and kick
the ball clear from danger. But the trouble was not over yet as Hunter
returned to punt into the Dundee redzone, giving them excellent field
position at the start of their next drive.
But the Hurricanes stood their ground and had to settle
for a field goal attempt, with injured McLauchlan coming back on to nail
the field goal and give the home side a one point lead, setting the scene
for a nervous final minutes.
With less than five minutes remaining and with now change
in the scoring, the Hurricanes were given a lucky break following another
special teams breakdown from the Tigers following a poor snap on a punt
attempt, with the punter putting his knew down on the ground as he tried
to get the ball away.
This gave the visitors an excellent final chance to clinch
victory, starting a new drive on the Tigers 40 yard line.
Less than two minutes remaining, the Tigers were fighting
for their lives, desperately trying to hold on to their slender lead.
Then Bruce Thomson did a great job in picking off Henderson
at the far corner for his second touchdown, sending the Dundee sideline
ecstatic.
Glasgow were unable to find anything left in the tank
to sneak a win, but they have another chance to get their own back and
get themselves back in the play off hunt when the two sides meet again
this coming Sunday.
