TIGERS PLAY OFF DREAMS ARE OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR

Glasgow Tigers 22 Doncaster Mustangs 46

Matt McCuskerIn this playoff fixture it was the power running of the Doncaster Mustangs which overcame the passing game of the Tigers.

In the first quarter both sides stalled on their first drives and as the game went on Glasgow struggled to stop the running game of the Mustangs, while their own offence couldn’t get going.

After a long drive Doncaster put some points on the board with a Giovanni Viscomi 4 yard run. The extra point kick failed and the quarter ended with the Mustangs 6-0 up.

In the second quarter everything went right for the Doncaster side with Viscomi adding a second rushing td and a Mark Blyth kick made it 13-0.

Then they added a further score with a 30 yard pass from QB Graham Lightfoot to receiver Ian McCartney.

Tigers Linebacker Martin McClintock blocked the following kick to leave it 19-0. Just as they thought it couldn’t get any worse the Tigers conceded a further score with seconds remaining when Lightfoot passed to Paul Weston from 28 yards out.

The half time whistle blew and Doncaster had a commanding 25-0 lead.

The Tigers came out fighting in the second half and QB Matt McCusker engineered and completed a fine drive with a 7 yard pass to Scott Couper in the end zone.

Doncaster’s Defence stopped the 2 point run to leave the Glasgow team trailing by 19 points.

With Doncaster pinned inside there own 15 yard line Brian Long exploded into the game with a 78 yard run into paydirt. This made it 31-6 to the Mustangs.

The fourth quarter saw the Mustangs extend their lead when running back Long scored from 12 yards out and this time the 2 point pass was completed from Lightfoot to Weston to give Doncaster a 39-14 margin.

Scott CouperWith the next drive Glasgow fought back and McCusker connected with receiver Robert Campbell for a 26 yard score. He then added the 2 point pass to Dan Seltzer to leave Glasgow trailing 14-39. Doncaster’s Offence were not finished and Brian Long completed his hat trick of scores with a 4 yard run.

Blyth completed the extra point kick and a 46 to 14 lead. To their credit Glasgow came back up the field and McCusker hit Scott Couper from 35 yards out.

On the conversion Johnny Smith connected with Couper for the 2 points and as Doncaster stopped the onside kick the game ended at 46-22 to the Mustangs who now head off to the next stage of the post season.

Tigers Head Coach Derek Taylor said “Doncaster played very well and deserved to win today, we left it too little too late” Coach Taylor will regroup his players later in the year to prepare for next season.
