Tigers Secure First Kitted Victory

The Tigers Junior Kitted Team got their 2005 preparations off to a great start with an emphatic 69-12 victory over the Paisley Panthers.

The Tigers travelled to Paisley for the first of their preseason friendlies and couldn’t have wished for better conditions. The clear, dry weather was perfectly suited for the Tigers’ aerial offence and quarterback Alan Steen didn’t disappoint, throwing for a total of 7 touchdowns on the day.

The Tigers opened their account on the opening possession with a TD from Steen to WR Nick Halfpenny.

It looked as though the only thing that could get in the Tigers way was the possibility that their sometimes leaky defence would allow the Panthers to stay in contention. The Panthers pressed home this point by scoring on their first possession to tie the game up at six points a piece.

The Tigers came out strong and quickly added another score when Steen passed for his second touchdown finding WR Scott McIntosh who had the speed to breeze past the Panthers’ defence and re-establish the lead.

The 2-point conversion was added by Speedie, catching the ball for his first Tigers score.

The Tigers then eased away adding a further 3 converted touchdowns before the half whilst allowing only 1 score from Paisley to leave the half-time score Glasgow 38, Paisley 12.

The touchdowns were provided by, Dickie, playing in his first game for the Tigers, a second TD for Scott McIntosh and David Fallon. Speedie added his second 2-point conversion of the day whilst Dickie converted his own and David’s scores and looked to be setting himself up as top scorer for the afternoon.

The comfortable half-time lead gave the Tigers the freedom to give more playing time to their less experienced players.

This paid off with three of the second half touchdowns coming from players making their first outing in a Tigers’ jersey. Dickie added to his tally with another touchdown coming from his strong running style, as he broke tackles on his way to the endzone.

Ewan made his first reception for the Tigers and took it all the way for a score showing his evasive running abilities and Speedie added to his first half contribution of 4 points with a well deserved TD catch.

The further two touchdowns came courtesy of Derek ‘Psycho’ Connor who looked determined once again show the running abilities that earned him the Offensive MVP award last season.

Both his touchdowns showed his strength and determination as he bulldozed his way for the scores, helped by some outstanding blocking upfront.

Kevin Connolly, who was captaining the defence for the first time, made a brief appearance on offence and reminded the coaches that he has become reliable on both sides of the ball scoring the only conversion of the second half.

The defence also showed their calibre by holding the Panthers scoreless in the second half. Sound pass coverage and aggressive gang tackling were the keys and it soon demoralised the struggling Paisley outfit.

The MVP awards for the game go to Kevin Connolly for his inspired performance on defence whilst the Offensive MVP is shared between QB Alan Steen for his outstanding performance and Dickie who led the team with 16 points.
