TIGERS DO THE DOUBLE

GLASGOW TIGERS 26 CHESTER ROMANS 0

Following the successful opening win against Edinburgh last week, the Glasgow Tigers senior side, back at Cambuslang Rugby Club, ensured a comfortable second day at the office, scoring 26 unanswered points against Chester Romans.

Even though it was anything but a walkover, the Tigers continued to build on their successfull opening victory agains Edinburgh the week before.

And despite the muddy surface, the Glasgow outfit took an eary lead and it was a lead that they were never likely to surrender, with Alex Paterson opening the scoring early in the first quarter.

The gap then started to widen when Iain “Sparky” Dick ran in a second touchdown in the second quarter.

Then after an unventfull third period, the Tigers wrapped things up in the fourth with touchdowns from Gordon Lochrie and Ryan McCluskey along with a two point conversion from Graeme Clee rounded off another successfull day at the office for the Scots.

With the rain coming down on the Tigers youth match earlier in the day, there was uncertainty as to what kind of game we were going to have on what was a heavy sodden pitch.

The Romans came into this game with a large squad.  And not having much success on previous visits to Scotland , it was certain to be a good test for the 2008 Tigers.

The Chester squad had arrived in plenty of time to not only take in the remainder of the youth match, but to assess the surface of the pitch for themselves.

With the intermittent rain and the surface having cut up badly with the Youth game, it was certain to create plenty of hazards for both teams.

And having to wait an extra thirty minutes before the game could get under way, then one saving grace was that there appeared to be some respite of the earlier showers.

It was the home side who made their mark early with a speedy kick off return from (22) blasting through a gap taking it all the way to the Romans 34 yard line.

Penalties pushed the Tigers back towards their end of the field, but the home side were still able to finish the move off when quarterback Ally Choat fired a 20 yard completion to a wide open Alex Paterson for the opening touchdown.

The Tigers increased their lead early in the second quarter, when Iain “Sparky” Dick turned on the speed, evading two marker to make it 12 – 0 for the home side.

However there was no sign of any rout as the English defensive unit made sure that the Tigers had to work for everything they could get, but they could not find a way through to open their account and get back into the game.

A mainly uneventful third quarter sprang into life when Choat decided to keep the ball himself for an 30 yard run to the Romans 15 yard line.

However the visitors were determined not to stand their ground and got their just rewards forcing a turnover on downs, deep in their half.

The Tigers then took control of the game in the final period when a great effort by Graeme Clee saw the Tigers rusher bounce of three challenges to finish four yards short of the goal line.

On the next play, the bulk of Gordon Lochrie proved too much for the Romans as he bulldozed through for another touchdown.

Glasgow were soon threatening the Romans redzone again and punished them for slack defending when Ryan McCluskey, in between two defenders pulled in another touchdown, with Clee adding a successful conversion to make it 26-0 to the Scots.
