TIGERS LEAVE IT TOO LATE

Matt McCuskerOn a fine day for gridiron action the Glasgow Tigers made a 4th quarter comeback but came up short in the final 2 minutes and the Wolves held on for a vital win.

In the first quarter the Edinburgh team forged ahead on their first possession, with a McNey QB sneak from 3 yards out. Dave Molloy successfully converted the 2 point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

On the ensuing kick off a fumble was recovered by the Wolves special teams unit and returned 40 yards for another score.

This time McNey passed to Derek Donaldson for the 2 point conversion and a 16-0 lead. The Tigers regrouped and towards the end of the quarter QB Matt McCusker connected with Paul Keys from 14 yards out for a touchdown.

The 2 point conversion was a completed pass from Matt McCusker to Bob Kalman, to make it 16-8 to the Wolves.

Throughout the second quarter both defensive units nullified the others offence, until Dave Molloy broke free in the dying seconds but ran out of time to leave it 16-8 at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter good work by the Wolves line helped them to a further score and this time Dave Molloy caught a 17 yard pass.

The conversion was incomplete and later in the quarter, a tigers fumble by QB McCusker, gave Edinburgh a short field with Molloy running in another score from 6 yards out. This time Gary McNey caught a pass for the 2 point conversion, and a commanding 30 to 8 lead for the Edinburgh Wolves.

The Glasgow Offence came alive in the 4th quarter and a pass from McCusker to Dan Seltzer, from 3 yards out and then a pass to Bob Kalman for the conversion brought the Tigers into the game and at 30-16 it was all to play for.

After another good stop by the Tigers Defence, McCusker marshalled his offence 60 yards down the field and from 7 yards out Bob Kalman ran in another score.

The Wolves Defence stopped the conversion and with 2 minutes left their offence went 3 and out to give the ball back to the Glasgow team. The Edinburgh teams Defence held firm on their 30 yard line and the Tigers ran out of time trying to score again.

This win has the Wolves with one foot in the playoffs and leaves the Tigers needing a big victory next week in the final encounter between these teams.

Edinburgh Coach Pete Laird commented after the game, "The guys played their hearts out, now we really have everything to play for next week. For the first time in a while, we control our own destiny."
