A stand out performance from the West Coast Trojans
defense helped the reigning BAFL Scottish Division Two Champions
stage a dramatic come from behind victory against a powerful Dundee
Hurricanes side.
The visitors took an early lead through a touchdown
catch from Fraser Thomson, but the Trojans, who were lacking the
offensive firepower from last week’s demolition of the Merseyside
Nighthawks due to the absence of key offensive players finally found
the way to the endzone in the second quarter, courtesy of a return
from Scott McMenemy.
With the Hurricanes having to re adjust their game
plan to injuries to their squad, the Trojans managed to edge in
front when Quarterback Gary McNey found receiver, Dave Pasnick open
for a second score, setting the scene for a dramatic finale in which
the Inverclyde outfit managed to hold off the intense pressure from
the Hurricanes.
Despite their impressive start to the season, things
did not look good for the Trojans coming into this game, minus three
key offensive linemen through injury and were without the services
of GB Receiver, Mark Squires.
They were up against a large travelling Dundee squad,
who had made some key additions to their roster, including their
late additions from the Edinburgh Wolves.
With
the Trojans having taken their Scottish crown last year, the Taysiders
were determined to send out a clear message that they were going
to have a fight on their hands if they were to hold on to the title
for a second year.
And after an exchange of drives in the opening period,
the Hurricanes were starting to make their mark thanks to the scrambling
abilities of Quarterback Mark Smith, who took the ball down to the
West Coast 11 yard line.
Then on the next play, Smith showed that he was
just as effective in firing the decisive pass when he picked off
Fraser Thomson in the far corner of the endzone for the opening
score.
The Trojans hit back on the next drive, when Jordan
Falconer burned the Astroturf for a major gain down the near side
to the Dundee 8 yard line.
But the size and strength of the Dundee defensive
line was proving to be a tough nut to crack for the Trojans, who
failed to tie the scoring following a failed 4th down attempt.
The Trojans resorted to their running game at the
start of the second quarter, but the lack of protection from the
West Coast O Line, made life tough for Falconer who eventually fell
short of the first down marker and they had to surrender possession
again.
However the size of the Dundee trench warriors,
opened up new doors for their scrambling Quarterback Smith, who
weaved his way though some ineffective challenges into the Trojans
half.
But thankfully for the home side, the play was called
back by the referees.
The wake up call appeared to spark some life in
the West Coast Rear Guard, who stepped up the pressure on Dundee,
forcing a fumble, which was recovered just inside the Hurricanes
half.
