BATTLE OF THE BACK FIELDS
West Coast Trojans 27-Dundee Hurricanes 21
This was expected to be a battle in the backfields with two of the country's most talent in running backs Dundee Hurricanes, Mahamadou Dooma Niakate and West Coast Trojans Jon Sutherland.
But it was the scoring exploits of Brian "Bud" McFerren that helped secure a much needed 27-21 victory against the in form Dundee Hurricanes, keeping their Division 1 play off hopes, very much alive.
Having experienced a bit of a roller coaster season for the Trojans, but since their last visit to their home ground, this was a much stronger offensive line up, featuring seasoned veterans, Pat Sheilds and recent recruit and former East Kibride Pirates lineman, the new Trojans assistant player coach, Ian Smith.
But Head Coach, Gary McNey was back at his recognised position at quarterback
And the home side could not have asked for a better start to the game when instead of going to the ground as expected, the Trojans opened up the scoring early in the first quarter when receiver Dave Pasnik, made a 13 yard completion for the opening six points.
The home side then increased their lead in some style as McFerren turned in an 84 yard interception return all the way to the endzone.
The Trojans kept up the momentum at start of the second quarter, when finally Jon Sutherland ran got on to the score board, running in from 12 yards out to make it 18 unanswered points to the Renfrewshire outfit.
The Hurricane appeared to be struggling to link up with their receivers. Then suddenly on a fourth down attempt, their offense ignited when a hand off to Dooma who turned on the speed, leaving the home side rear guard for dead with a 40 yard touchdown run.
Bruce Thomson decided to keep the ball himself to run in a successful two point conversion attempt. Suddley it looked as if the momentum was starting to swing back in the Hurricanes favour.
West Coast hit back on their next drive with a terrific 30 yard from Sutherland, but the home side cold not capitalise and the drive stalled.
The Hurricanes star rusher continued to heap more pressure on the ground and put more pressure on the home side, and exposed a weakness in the Trojans defense again with another lung bursting run into the endzone, which he followed with a successful conversion kick to reduce the deficit to three points
The next Trojans drive ended with Pasnik nailing a successful field goal attempt to extend the home side's lead to six points.
The Trojans the started to see some daylight, when McFerren got in the way of a Thomson pass for the second time, running in his second score of the day.
Doomba put the visitors back into the game, diving over the line for another touchdown, making it a one score game.
The rest of the game turned into a defensive trade off, with both sides cancelling out the oppositions attack. But it meant that the Trojans were able to hold on to their slim lead and now head south in this coming week in search of a much needed victory over Redditch .
