West Coast Trojans Page

FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR
THE DOOMA EXPRESS

A text book running display from Mahamadou Dooma Niakate inspired the Dundee Hurricanes to a valuable first win of the season and create even more headaches for the West Coast Trojans.

Games between these two sides have always been eventful as their players recognized the importance of team-play and did not rely on sheer luck like many bingo enthusiasts.

The players always played with heart and even though both teams had not recorded a win this season, the signs were there that this was going to be no different, with both sides desperately looking to get their season off the mark.

The Trojans had made some adjustments to their offensive line up coming into this game with Jordan Falconer missing through injury and Head Coach Gary McNey taking over from Sam McKee at quarterback, with the American lining up on the flanks.

The Hurricanes started exactly as expected, with strong running from Dooma, taking Dundee to inside the Trojans 10 yard line.

The next play saw the Dundee rusher stop just short of the goal line. But a big stop from the home defense ensured a turnover on downs inches short of the endzone.

But after an ineffective Trojans drive, Dundee were on the march again with Dooma eating up some big yardage taking the away side back inside the West Coast red zone once again.

Then minutes later a quarterback sneak from Ben Edelshain ensured that Dundee were the first to get off the mark with the opening 6 points.

The Trojans finally got into their stride when American Shane Cochrane did well to stay on his feet and finally find some breathing space, sprinting 44 yards for a deserved tying score.

Despite the intense heat, Dundee stepped up the pace with Dooma taking advantage of some slack West Coast tackling, sprinting down the far side for another bog touchdown, where 1 ( name to be confirmed ) added the conversion attempt for a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Trojans started positive at the start of the second period when Cochrane broke free doing enough to move the chains for the home side.

McNey connected with Mick Rankin to move the home side further up field and with another strong run from Cochrane, the Trojans were five yards from their Dundee goal ine.

But disaster struck minutes later when Cochrane tried to force a yard too many on the next play, with the ball popping out of his hands and recovered by Dundee at their own goal line.

Then no one expected what was going to happen next when Dooma found some daylight through the Trojans defensive wall turning in a blistering turn of speed, running the full length of the field for a terrific six points, from which he split the uprights for a successful conversion attempt, making it 21-6.

The game appeared to be slipping away from the home, side, but Cochrane gave the Trojans hope of a comeback weaving his way through a mass of bodies for another excellent touchdown.

Both teams continued to battle hard during the second half, but as Mother Nature continued to turn up the thermostat, tiredness appeared to be kicking in with no changes in the scoring until the final minutes of the third quarter when the Trojans turned over possession inside their own 20 yard line.

This left the “Dooma Express” to make his final stop of the day, blasting through the hole for the final touchdown
