TROJANS CLINCH DIVISION TWO TITLE
West
Coast Trojans showed their championship winning character in their
penultimate regular season game at Scotstoun Stadium, having to come
from behind to record what turned out to be an emphatic 47-14 victory
against the Dundee Hurricanes.
Earlier this season, the Trojans recorded a 55-0
hammering of the Hurricanes at Dundee back in May, but this was a
totally different Hurricanes side that ran out on to the pitch at
Scotstoun Stadium, where a win was vital for their playoff hopes –
whereas the Trojans were looking to record their 9th straight
win which would also give them
the Division Two Scottish title and top ranking in the
forthcoming play offs.
The visitors were fired up at the start of the game
and showed that the Trojans had a fight on their hands when Craig
Blacklaw weaved his way through for the opening touchdown following by a
successful two point conversion attempt.
The Trojans hit back on their next possession
with big yardage from Bud
McFerren , with the drive ending with Jordan Falconer turning on the
speed leaving the Hurricanes defense off balance
taking the ball all the way into the endzone, but the Hurricanes
managed to hold on to their lead by shutting down the Trojans 2 point
conversion attempt.
But early in the second quarter, the visitors
stretched their lead when their star rusher, Mahamadou Niakate
ran in a second touchdown with little resistance from the home
defense.
The Trojans started to get their offensive machine in
gear early in the second half when Falconer found a gap in the Dundee
defense running in a second touchdown with Ruaraidh MacDonald bringing
in a two point conversion catch to make it all square.
The game appeared to be running away from the
visitors when Falconer ran in another touchdown.
And the soon added to their tally when quarterback Gary McNey
picked off Tommy McGeorge at the far corner of the endzone to make it
26-14 in favour of the home side, with Macdonald splitting the uprights
for a successful 1 point conversion.
Then during the final stages of the third period
McFerren ran into the far corner of the endzone to make it 33-14 for the
Trojans.
Despite their first half heroics, the energy seemed
to have gone out of the Hurricanes attack, but they still continued to
battle hard on every play, trying to take some shine out of the Trojans
domination of the second half.
But the second half rout continued when Dougie Ritson
ran in another touchdown.
Then MacDonald followed it up to make it 45-14 for
the home side with Scott Little running in the two point conversion and
wrap up the Scottish title one week ahead of schedule
