Having opened the season with an undeafeated 2-0
record, the West Coast Trojans entertained a Glasgow Tigers side
who had ended their winning streak
in last seasons finale and who were confident of a repeat in today’s
encounter.
Their belief appeared to be justified early on as
Tigers Running Back Graeme Clee ripped through the Trojans defense
racking up 70 yards on their opening drive, scampering into the
endzone from 10 yards for the opening score.
With the conversion successful, Glasgow held an
8-0 lead but the Trojans response was swift as Dave Pasnik gave
the Tigers a sign of things to come, returning the restart kick-off
deep into enemy territory to set up a 15 yard bullet from Gary McNey
to Czech wideout Petr Svanda to bring the Trojans to within two
points.
Any thoughts of this battle for west coast supremacy
turning into a shootout would prove to be premature however.
As the interval approached the Trojans hard hitting
defense began to come to grips with the Tigers offense, however
their own attack would do them no favours, turning the ball over
3 times as neither side seriously threatened the others endzone
again allowing the Tigers to retain their slender advantage at the
break.
As play resumed for a brief moment it appeared that
the second half was going to offer more frustration for the Trojans,
as Pasnik struggled to handle the opening kickoff on his own goalline,
but then the American picked up the ball and the tone of the game
as he raced the length of the field untouched to turn the game in
favour of the Trojans.
Mike Bekier added the two point conversion and with
it his first Trojans points in a
strong showing from the veteran. However the Trojans found new ways
to keep their opponents in the game, conceding 40 yards in penalties
to allow the Tigers an easy score with the gargantuan Jamie McCansh
bulldozing in on the goaline to tie the game.
With the game proving to be unfathomably close,
the talismanic Jordan Falconer was called in to action despite carrying
a knee injury. He still proved to have an elusiveness and blistering
turn of pace that would finally give the Trojans offense an incisiveness
that they had lacked in the first half scoring on a well orchestrated
drive.
The Tigers however were in no mood to give up and
stayed alive by returning the kickoff
back to the endzone to again draw level at 20 points.
With time running out the Trojans finally started
to eliminate the mistakes to gain a stranglehold on the game. McNey
scrambled in from 10 yards to give the Port Glasgow team an advantage
that finally they would prove not to relinquish.
With the ball turned over on the next possession
McNey connected with first Svanda then Ross Murray for an excellent
sideline grab with Falconer continuing the progress with some strong
running.
With only 5 minutes left in the game the Trojans
could sense victory and McNey called a reverse which Pasnik ran
home for his second touchdown of the afternoon.
Both teams next possessions went 3 and out and with
the Tigers trying desperately to make something happen as time ran
out Trojans Safety Martin McLintock sacked the Tigers quarterback
for a 10 yard loss forcing a do or die pass which was intercepted
by none other than Pasnik who had come on to assist at Free Safety.
