West Coast Trojans v Highland Wildcats

The West Coast Trojans remain unstoppable in the British American Football National League Division Two Northern Conference with their sixth shutout of the season and a 60-0 trouncing of the Highland Wildcats.

The win saw the Trojans maintain their 100% regular season record, with 348 points scored, conceding only 12.

Following their 35-0 win over the Clyde Valley Blackhawks the week before, the Trojans, back at their new home, Glasgow’s Scotstoun Stadium, came into this game as clear favourites against a Wildcats side having only won one game from seven this season.

And after going 3 and out in their opening drive, the Wildcats were under pressure when Bud McFerren turned on the speed taking the ball all the way home for the opening six points.

It was not long before the home side increased their lead when McNey fired a long pass up the middle to David Fallon which was converted for a 13-0 lead.

Looking at their stats, the Trojans defensive record  of five shutouts speaks for itself and it was a record that they were determined to add to, leaving the visitors very little room for manoeuvre in what was developing into a one sided affair.

And the second quarter could not have started any better for the Trojans, when thanks to their defensive troops; they increased their lead when Dave Carney got in the way of a Roddy Ross pass, returning the ball two thirds the length of the field for another six points.

Things continued to look bleak for the visitors when Gary McNey fired a diagonal pass to David Fallon for another touchdown, which the quarterback/head coach, converted to make it 26 unanswered points.

The game started to run away from the Wildcats when McFerren ran in another touchdown from seven yards out.   Then inside the two minute warning, Arron Patterson pulled off another big interception, taking the ball all the way home for a 38-0 half time lead.

The Wildcats were now fighting for pride which got badly dented even more when a trademark long run from McFerren made it another touchdown for the Trojans, with Tommy McGeorge following up with a two point conversion catch.

The visitors continued to battle hard to curtail the Trojans attack and it looked as if they were getting rewards for their efforts forcing the home side with a long third situation.  Enter the “Bud Express” who turned on the speed again, taking the ball all the way home for another six points and then added another two with a conversion run into far corner.

The Trojans increased their lead when Ruaraidh MacDonald made it 60-0 for the home side.  And despite the trouncing, the Wildcats continued to battle hard and try and take something out of the game and put a bit of a dent in the West Coast points tally.

There best chance came in the dying minutes when Martin Devlin tried his luck with a long field goal attempt, which fell short of the target.
