We are well into the regular season and at the
moment; the West Coast Trojans can do no wrong.
On Sunday they were back at their new home, the
highly rated Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow and they maintained their 100%
record in the Northern Conference of the BAFA Community League Division
Two in style with a 55 points hammering of their east coast rivals and
last year’s Scottish Champions, the Edinburgh Wolves.
The late kick off did not seem to match the
attendance figures from their debut game against Glasgow Tigers a few
weeks ago.
Both teams came into this match on the back of big
wins.The Trojans were
looking to maintain their 100% record this season, whereas the Wolves,
who have enjoyed success against the Trojans in the past, were looking
to build some momentum following their last gasp victory against Clyde
Valley Blackhawks seven days earlier.
But it appeared to be business as usual for the home
side during the opening period when a long run from Tommy McGeorge all
the way to the endzone resulted in the first six points for the Trojans.
The Wolves struggled to mount and effective reply and
when they had to start a new drive from deep inside their half of the
field, the Trojans defense, who had only conceded 12points during the first four games of the campaign, turned up the
heat and increased the lead with a 2 point safety.
The Trojans were soon knocking on the door of the
Wolves endzone and a catch from Tight End David Fallon ensured a 15- 0
lead at the end of a one sided first quarter.
The Wolves defense made a positive start to the
second period, stepping up their work rate, trying to contain the
Trojans attack.But the
visitors were stunned when a long 2nd down from the Trojans,
saw Quarterback, Gary McNey fired a long pass to McGeorge for his second
touchdown of the day, with Ruaraudh MacDonald bringing in a 2 point
conversion catch.
The Wolves game plan was starting to fall apart when
Bud McFerren weaved through a mass of bodies for another touchdown, with
McGeorge splitting the uprights for a successful conversion kick.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, Edinburgh continued
to battle hard making the Trojans fight for every point.
And going into the final seconds it looked as if the
Wolves had thwarted a late drive from the Trojans offense. But on fourth
down, McGeorge decided to try his luck with a long field goal attempt,
which bounced off the top of the cross bar and crept over for a 33-0
half time lead.
Edinburgh started the third quarter strongly and had
a chance to open their account, but a field goal attempt from Keiran
Smith was blocked.
That seemed to be the wakeup call that the Trojans
needed when Jordan Falconer shrugged off a number of challenges to run
in another six points, with McGeorge nailing another successful
conversion kick.
The rout continued when McFerren turned on the speed
again for his second touchdown of the day with McGeorge adding another
successful conversion kick.
The points continued when
Donny
McKormick dived over the goal line
to make it 53 unanswered points, leaving McNey to catch the Wolves off balance with a 2 point conversion
catch.
