TROJANS SEVENTH HEAVEN

West Coast Trojans 36 Edinburgh Wolves 12
British Gridiron
League Rookies, West Coast Trojans clinched their place in the BAFL
Division Two Play Offs and their first ever national title with
a commanding 36-12 victory over Edinburgh Wolves at Port Glasgow’s
St Stephens High School.
Having won their first six games, including a victory
over the Wolves earlier in the season, one more victory was required
to give the Inverclyde outfit the Division Two Scottish Conference
crown.
But even though the Trojans were once again favourites
following their emphatic road victory over Manchester Titans, the
signs were that this was going to be a much tougher encounter compared
to their previous meeting, with the Wolves having received a much
needed confidence boost after their demolition of the Merseyside
Nighthawks.
However Jordan Falconer put the Trojans in front
early in the first quarter and it was a lead that they would never
surrender.
Alan Street increased the Trojans lead, with Paul
Keyes adding a successful two point conversion attempt.
Dave Molloy brought the Wolves back into contention,
but the home side stretched to sixteen points ahead courtesy of
a second strike from Street and Keyes.
The Trojans dominance continued when a Jon Sutherland
touchdown, which was again converted by Keyes, gave the Wolves a
mountain to climb.
And despite Alan Price pulling a score back for
the visitors, the Trojans wrapped up the title in style with a typical
Jon Sutherland punt return just outside the two minute warning.
Said
Trojans General Manager Drew McCabe: “The Wolves were coming
in on a high after last week’s game. I would not say that
we were being complacent but there were times when our heads were
not really in the game and we were conceading penalties".
"We had quite a few guys missing today and they were experienced
guys, so we had rookies on as starters. But some of the lads came
through well, like young CB Mike Rankine.”
“They were getting back into the game and a chance in getting
a score, but then Mike Smith gets an interception and saves us.
It was a tough game, tougher than we expected.”
With three games of the regular season remaining
and having exceeded expectations already, the West Coast GM is excited
about what has been achieved so far and about the new challenges
that will hopefully take them all the way to Sheffield for the UK
Crown
He said: “It has not been an easy ride, but
it is a great relief to get the conference championship in the bag,
so we can start focusing on the play offs now.”
“We have got to get more of our rookies in.
If things go to plan we could end up against Coventry Jets, who
are the team to beat. So we need to be at our best and have the
strongest squad possible.”
“We are doing well as they are getting more
and more game time, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.”
On their
UK Championship prospects, the Trojans GM added: “I don’t
think that a new team has won a championship before, so to have
won Div 2, Scottish is an achievement in itself."
"And to
eventually have two Scottish teams in the First Division would be
a real feather in the cap for Scottish American Football.”
