Wolves preparing for April 27 season
opener in Glasgow!
The Edinburgh Wolves will play a friendly against Division One side Kent Exiles on Saturday, March 15 at the Jack Kane Centre. Kick-off is 1pm. Admission is free.
The Wolves, who usually play a local or university side in the lead-up to the start of the season, have set their standards higher by inviting the upper-division Exiles to Edinburgh .
The Wolves open their season on April 27 at Glasgow . Coach Don Edmonston said:
“The Wolves go into this game with a squad full of rookies but are ready to step up to the task of playing at this higher level. It will be no easy task, as the Exiles are well-drilled, disciplined and out to impress their new coaches.”
"This game will provide the Wolves coaches and players the chance to step up and play against a well disciplined team. This is where we want to be in two to three years, playing Division One football at Meadowbank stadium.”
Wolves defensive co-coordinator Chip Lyall said: "We will use this game to see how our defence copes with the expected speed of the Exiles.”
Wolves offensive co-ordinator Campbell Lewis said: "The whole team is itching to get on the field
against the Exiles. This is a great test for us and one that we feel will do us a world of good for the season ahead."
Kent coach Norman Navarro said with new staff and over 12 new players he was looking for a solid pre-season opponent.
“We have been using the preseason not only to get the players on the same page in terms of football but also to bond as a family,” he says. “And playing the Wolves for our final preseason game allows us to continue to do just that.”
“The Wolves are a young, hungry team, and I am certain Coach Edmonston will have them chomping at the bit to give us Southerners a ‘warm' welcome on the field.”
“And they'll probably lead us astray off it during the evening's festivities.”
On offence, the Exiles will be taking a look at running back Xavier Heckle, who returns to the club after a three-year break. Other strengths on the offensive side of the ball are young tight ends Rob Welling and Rob Stewart.
Defensively, the Exiles will be unleashing defensive co-ordinator Scott Rowe's new formations which will be led by Mark Vickers, all-rounder Aaron Alexis, and new defensive co-captain Mark Evans.
After kicking off the season on the road in Glasgow on April 27, the Scottish capital's Division 2 side will play Liverpool 's Merseyside Nighthawks on May 4 at Meadowbank stadium.
The Wolves play another three games at Meadowbank on July 5, 20, and 26 against Manchester, Glasgow and Lancashire , respectively, before finishing the season on the road against Manchester on August 16.
Coach Don Edmonston said:: “This is a great schedule for us with a great mix of local and divisional rivalries. We are looking forward to settling some old scores from last year. I really think our preseason this year will help us to iron out the simple mistakes we saw all too often last year”
Wolves General Manager Douglas Adamson said: “It's a tough schedule with a lot of travelling but having three home games in July gives us a chance to build a solid homefield advantage and gain some momentum.”
